New York Neighborhoods |

Posted by fordhamroad22 on Tue Nov 17 20:19:15 2009 Can anyone who knows of one recommend the most highly detailed/accurate map of the five boroughs and the neighborhoods that divide them? Yahoo maps does a pretty decent job, but I am wondering if I could find better.-fordhamroad |

That won't work for Brooklyn, Bronx, or Manhattan, as the zip code lines don't divide those neighborhoods. There are no "official" neighborhood lines for those boroughs in Hagstroms. Unlike Queens which is divided by zip code, officially. The same is not true of the other boroughs. |

No such map will ever exist. That link is about as good as it gets. It was only a few weeks ago that we had a thread here over the boundary between LIC and Astoria. Neigborhoods tend to bleed into each other with common buffer areas that are subject to any individual resident's or business's preference. |

I still don't understand why you keep saying that considering that the neighborhoods were there long before zip codes. Just because the USPS says those are the neighborhood boundaries doesn't necessarily make it so. I would never trust the USPS for that kind of accuracy. They often don't even get city borders correct, much less neighborhoods. |

A zip code map is OK in the absence of anything else but it consolidates small neigborhoods and breaks up larger ones and omits others altogether. An example below: ![]() |

I always wondered, well not always, but I always wondered why mailing addresses for businesses in Queens often use the quote unquote neighborhood rather than the borough like the other counties. The present day Borough of Queens was a collection of towns and villages up until 1898 and these villages remained seperated by large swaths of undeveloped farm land up until the subways and cars took care of that. The proud ancient village names live on as neighboorhoods and people rightfully don't want that to change. It's the same in Staten Island. Brooklyn was already it's own city with a rich tradition in 1898 and Manhattan and The Bronx were contiguous with the then-NYC. |

Neighborhood names are clear cut in Queens. They are divided up by zip code. If you are in 11379, you are in Middle Village, and so forth. However, the same is not true in Manhattan, Bronx, and Brooklyn. Zip codes do NOT divide up neighborhoods by their lines in those boroughs. One zip code could contain 2 or 3 "neighborhoods", and one neighborhood name can sometime be in 2 or even 3 zip codes. I don't know enough about Staten Island to comment. |

Queens's neighborhoods were, until joined to NY, parts of 4 separate cities, and before that separate villages, to which the Post Office assigned individual names (and later, Zip codes). Each neighborhood in Queens has a strong individual historic identity. Until 1898, Queens included Nassau -- each town in Nassau has its own P.O. designation.Brooklyn's neighborhoods were all part of the unitary City of Brooklyn. The Bronx was originally part of the Manhattan P.O., and in Manhattan, again, all neighborhoods were part of the main City P.O. |

Just because the USPS says those are the neighborhood boundaries doesn't necessarily make it so.Uhhh, they do in Queens. if you are in Middle Village, you are in 11379. Clear cut, for all lof Queens. (with a few rare exceptions, such as Ridgewood/Glendale, which share 11385, but that is because of the quirky fact that Ridgewood used to be served out of the Brooklyn Post office, even though in Queens, but that is a whole other topic, and an anormality there). So yes, Queens is divided up by zip code, which is also the divisions of neighborhood. CLEAR CUT. |

That map you posted doesn't work. It's a community board map, not a neighborhood map.For example, Community Board 5 contains Many neighborhoods, such as Ridgeweood, Glendale, Maspeth, Middle Village, etc. Bushwick is in two separate community boards depending on where you are, and so forth. Can't go by "community board" lines, as it doesn't give you the neighborhood boundaries. |

This is true, but while the towns and villages were seperate entities, the "neighborhoods" were not. For example, you would be in the town of "Newtown" if you lived in Glendale, but you didn't have your own government in Glendale. It would be similar to how let's say Nassau and Suffolk are cut up. You can live in "Hicksville", which is a neighborhood, but you are in the Town of Oyster Bay, in the county of Nassau. (Of course, that used to be Queens, but that's another topic). |
