I always wondered, well not always, but I always wondered why mailing addresses for businesses in Queens often use the quote unquote neighborhood rather than the borough like the other counties.

The present day Borough of Queens was a collection of towns and villages up until 1898 and these villages remained seperated by large swaths of undeveloped farm land up until the subways and cars took care of that. The proud ancient village names live on as neighboorhoods and people rightfully don't want that to change. It's the same in Staten Island.
Brooklyn was already it's own city with a rich tradition in 1898 and Manhattan and The Bronx were contiguous with the then-NYC.
