Ever been there?

Yes in 1971. Today is a sad day for those that have not.

Did a little looking into it. Next to none of the original glass is in those windows. In fact, some of the designs were scrambled over the years. I would love to see them redone as best as possible to the original, utilizing the same techniques as had been used then and in most of the previous restorations. Let's hope they choose to lose the few modern (and not so, some glass was changed out in the 19th century to make the nave brighter) glass windows too.

Most of the original glass has long since been lost. I hope they take what little may remain out and keep it preserved. There are artists who know how to do a proper restoration of the glass. That art isn't lost, it just costs plenty. Nice as original may be, after this immense amount of time it shouldn't be out in the environment.

I have seen reports that two of the three main large rose windows are okay for the main part. The third has fallen out. I see differing reports on the rest of the windows.
Also, it appears the roof and attic are destroyed. However, amazingly there is a stone ceiling beneath that, which is the visible ceiling of the church inside, and that is intact, or at least mostly. I have seen photos of this fact.

Wikipedia says the vaulted stone roof underneath the wood and lead roof saved much of the interior from falling burning timbers.

The article also quotes the Guardian as claiming the north rose window was still intact. That actually seems to be the one of the three that was mostly original glass.

Macron also says "The worst has been avoided."

Still a massive disaster. I don't expect repairs to be completed in my lifetime.

This fire is very tragic and saddening... I hope they are able to rebuild and restore as much, or all as possible.

I was there summer of '68 - student trip, was in Paris for about month - French govt. paid for 2/3rd's of expenses - cost to students about $850.00 We stayed in a French boarding high school, The Lycee Michelet - a large funky, extensive and rambling, several hundred year old building in Vanves (close to Marie D'Issy station line 12).

Visited Notre Dame that summer, took slides inside and out. We walked around the main cathedral inside, unfortunately I don't think my group viewed any of the medieval tapestries, or artifacts. Was there again in 1985 - took more exterior slides of Notre Dame, but didn't not go inside this time. Again, a sad tragedy....

IIRC there have been fires in the past, including one in the 1800s.

It was in 1871, during the Paris Commune. Notre-Dame was torched but the fire was quickly extinguished.

The Paris Commune was also when the Internationale was written, which later became the national anthem of the RSFSR/USSR until 1944 (with Russian lyrics). It remains the anthem of socialists the world over. I don't doubt Sanders knows how to sing it in English.

I'm with Spider-Pig. I wouldn't wait for perfection.

A few years back, I went over and based in Paris, for 12 days.

I spent most or all of a day at the Louvre. I didn't see everything. I saw a lot. It's good enough.

Did Notre Dame, Eiffel Tower, Disneyland Paris, a round-trip on the TGV to Bordeaux (though I could have done another trip elsewhere probably as well), and a lot of other stuff (got to see the fireworks at the Eiffel Tower on Bastille Day actually)!

No need to speak French, although I think they appreciated that I had good pronunciation for things like the rail station names and other landmarks. Even that's not all that necessary though.

I wouldn't necessarily recommend less than a week, but if you can manage to go for a week or two, I wouldn't wait until you can go for a month, or until you master the language. And who knows what may prevent us from traveling at any point in the future?

And of course, since our time is limited, if you wait until the perfect vacation, you will end up not going at all.

I went to Paris for four days. I don't regret going there for only four days, because my going there for 4 days does not prevent me from ever going there again in the future.

I didn't ride the TGV, but I rode the Eurostar.

The Paris Commune was also when the Internationale was written.

It was sung to the Marseillaise, in the Commune. The current melody did not appear until 1888.

I don't doubt Sanders knows how to sing it in English.

One of the English versions contains the following:

Let no one build walls to divide us,
Walls of hatred nor walls of stone.
Come greet the dawn and stand beside us,
We'll live together or we'll die alone.
