Polygamists Celebrate Supreme Court’s Marriage Rulings

“The nuclear family, with a dad and a mom and two or three kids, is not the majority anymore,” one polygamist cheers.

McKay Coppins, BuzzFeed Staff
Posted on June 26, 2013 at 3:46pm EDT
The Supreme Court’s rulings in favor of same-sex marriage Wednesday were greeted with excitement by polygamists across the country, who viewed the gay rights victory as a crucial step toward the country’s inevitable acceptance of plural marriage.

Anne Wilde, a vocal advocate for polygamist rights who practiced the lifestyle herself until her husband died in 2003, praised the court’s decision as a sign that society’s stringent attachment to traditional “family values” is evolving.

“I was very glad… The nuclear family, with a dad and a mom and two or three kids, is not the majority anymore,” said Wilde. “Now it’s grandparents taking care of kids, single parents, gay parents. I think people are more and more understanding that as consenting adults, we should be able to raise a family however we choose.”

“We’re very happy with it,” said Joe Darger, a Utah-based polygamist who has three wives. “I think [the court] has taken a step in correcting some inequality, and that’s certainly something that’s going to trickle down and impact us.”

Noting that the court found the Defense of Marriage Act unconstitutional because the law denied marriage rights to a specific class of people, Darger said, “Our very existence has been classified as criminal… and I think the government needs to now recognize that we have a right to live free as much as anyone else.”

Gay rights advocates have long sought to distance themselves from polygamists in order to undermine social conservatives’ slippery-slope argument, as articulated on Twitter Wednesday by talk radio host Bryan Fischer: “The DOMA ruling has now made the normalization of polygamy, pedophilia, incest and bestiality inevitable. Matter of time.”

But polygamists in the United States, where bigamy is a crime, have taken cues from the marriage equality movement, and the few public champions of the lifestyle have deliberately positioned themselves as libertarian-minded gay rights advocates as well. Following gay rights activists’ lead, polygamist families — like the Browns, with their TLC reality show Sister Wives, and the Dargers, who came out with a book last year — have come forward to convince the American public that their lifestyle can be wholesome and normal.

The key difference in their missions, Wilde said, is that “gays want legal marriage and polygamists don’t” — they just want their lifestyle to be decriminalized.

“If you legalize plural marriage, that means the government is going to control certain aspects of it,” Wilde reasoned. “They might say, you have to make so much money, you can’t have any more than four like it says in the Koran.”

Still, she said the court’s decision would only help polygamists’ cause.

“I’m not a fortune-teller, but it seems like if more people are accepting of gay marriage, it would follow that polygamist marriage wouldn’t be criticized quite so much.”

But some polygamists were trying to temper their enthusiasm Wednesday.

“I do see this as a positive step toward recognizing the civil rights of the plural culture to make their lifestyle choices without being branded as criminals,” said Marlyne Hammon, a practicing polygamist. “We are still in the trenches facing the reality of stubborn, unjust laws, so we are cautious about breaking out the champagne just yet.”

They shouldn't get too happy. The ruling was not about all forms of relationship being equal, just that there was no rational basis to favor 1 to 1 mappings of different gender couples over same gender couples. The government does not recognize any 1 to n mappings or n to n mappings and for many practical reasons. If they did however they would have to recognize both polygamy and polyandry and all combinations thereof. Hell, the government doesn't have to sanction any marriage at all and just treat everyone as individuals, but in the words of Spider Man they decided that everybody gets one.

It makes no difference to them, despite what they might think.

Part of what has made being gay respectable is that people came to understand that just because you're gay doesn't mean that you're a bad influence on children or a danger to children. Also, being gay doesn't mean that you raise your children to be gay.

In contrast, the polygamist groups in UT and AZ have inherent child abuse risks built into their society. Until they figure out a way to fix those, they will never gain any sort of respectability.

Sure.

Hildale, UT and Colorado City, AZ, have an equal number of boys and girls growing up year by year. As these kids become teenagers, thought is given to their eventually getting married.

Oops. Every boy uses up 3 girls. There's a surplus of boys with no girls their age to marry. What to do?

I don't know what the right answer for such a society would be. I do know what's happening right now, though. The excess boys get expelled from the community, typically at an age like 15 or so. They drive the boys to St. George and tell them to have a nice life.

Polygamy is illegal per Federal Law.

No marriage equality law permits any relationship except that between two consenting monogamous adults.

So they ought to get over themselves. Nobody will legitimize what they're doing.

Absolutely, nice to see you finally post something I can agree with. A broken clock is right twice a day, after all

I do not support marriage at all. In any way shape or form, however, the Supreme Court ruling this week bought tears to my eyes nonetheless. I feel that those who support the institution of marriage should be free to do so. I have no right to condemn something just because I do not think it is my cup of tea.

I truly feel if more people subscribed to this belief the people of this world could focus on what the real problems are.

So what
So was gay marriage
Proves nothing

No marriage equality law permits any relationship except that between two consenting monogamous adults

Doesn't mean it is right
Laws banning gay marriage were wrong
Laws banning multiple marriages are also wrong

So they ought to get over themselves. Nobody will legitimize what they're doing

Thats what they said about gay marriage years ago too

Monogamy is so obsolete
All it does is cause jealousy and "cheating"

and many religions excommunicate/eject gay people.

That hasn't stopped gay marriage.

Either way, the polygamists' joy is premature.
The Court did not recognize any right for people to marry whomever they want.

It's just said that the Federal Government has no right to not recognize marriages that are otherwise legal in these United States.

No different than some States allowing marriages between first cousins and others not doing so.
The Feds recognize them either way for federal purposes and benefits.

The issue of polygamy would only come up if some State were to recognize multi-person marriages.

Millions of Americans disagree. If one is so selfish as to cheat on a marriage, maybe they shouldn't be married to begin with. Sort out your life before commitment to another.

Polygamy uses and demeans all involved. It creates anchor less children, who do not see their parents as equals and in some cases aren't even sure who one of their actual parents ARE. This is no way to raise children capable of functioning in the 21st century, and leaves them at a loss to develop relationships of their own that are healthy and compatible with modern thinking. They don't get the model of normal (legal) relationships between adults while growing up.

Monogamy belongs in the stone age

Sex should be as common as shaking hands between people who like each other

no strigs attached

no jealous husbands or lovers

living arrangements should be temporary

"till death do us part" does NOT work
it only leads to jealousy, cheating and divorce

So you're going to have your estate divided up by everyone you've ever slept with? Somehow I don't think so. Piss off one woman and she'll pull the plug on you? Want to pay their bills? Without legal structures to regulate relationships, all of those could happen legally.

by the way - lots of women want three ways with two guys

its a lot more common than you think

polygamy does not have to be one man with many women

women should have the right to marry as many men as they want too

I don't care. Everyone can do what they want. Only monogamous relationships get to marry.

Why?

because "its the law"

gay marriage bans were also "the law"

but that changed

many people are already choosing not to marry

more kids being born to single moms than ever before

more women are cheating than ever before

monogamy will be history real soon

Children need a lot more than a contract to ensure they grow to be rational sane functional people. Like 2 parents to provide love guidance and attention for starters. They are far more than the result of unprotected sex.
