Well, Al and guest had a lot to say about this DC stuff as you can imagine.I forget the name of the guest but he's an attorney who teaches at Harvard and has been practicing law for decades and appears every Wednesday on Sharpton's show. First they talked about Ben's Chili Bowl and the neighborhood around there and how sad it is to see "People walking a little poodle late at night instead of how it used to be". Then they talked about how some black families are moving to Prince George County, VA just to be able to afford a home and still work in DC. I believe it. It's true for many NY blacks who dream of buying a home, and have to move all the way Suffolk, Poconos, or near Poughkeepsie. I read what you said about blacks and browns earning less, thus being "forced out" during gentrification. That's part of the problem, but there's more to it. You have to understand how middle class whites are able to stay in or near the city while minorities are moving to distant suburbs in many cases. Whites are usually willing to live at home much longer than minorities. We save a ton of money in the process and by the time we're 35 or 40 we have the money for a down payment on a $450,000 home in a "nice" area like Middle Village, Fresh Meadows, Massapequa, or even Howard Beach. Death in the family is another reason why whites are better off than minorities in the housing market. While many blacks and latinos have grown up in the "inner-city", usually renting, whites as a percentage have always been more likely to own a home. When the parents die, and you inherit a $500,000 home and have to split it with only one sibling, your mortgage problems are pretty much solved. That's how it works. That's how I see it. |
