The US population of people of Italian descent, descends from a narrow slice of Italy, mainly Sicily, Campania, Calabria, Puglia and Abruzzo. It is not representative of Italians. It's not even representative of Southern Italians who have mixed with Northerners and Central Italians in the last century. They are the descendants of Southerners of 100 or more years ago. How many times have you ever run into somebody who is of Lombard, Friulano, Umbrian, Tuscan, Ligurian, Emiliano or Piemontese descent? Americans of Italian descent don't even know where those places are even though that's where more than two-thirds of actual Italians reside. |
