One Step Forward, Two Steps Back

After President Obama's year-end legislative accomplishments withy the lame-duck Congress before the holiday break, the GOP is all set to begin 2011 with a bang, introducing a House bill to repeal healthcare reform. Although Democrats still control the Senate, and Obama can veto the repeal bill if it gets to his desk, it's something to think about: do we really want to go back to the days when your insurer could drop you when you got sick, deny lifesaving procedures as a cost-cutting measure, or refuse hospitals payment for treatments and medications they had no choice but to deliver?

Repealing healthcare reform would be like flattening the tires on the ambulance so it can't reach you while you lay bleeding in the street. Keep in mind that this year, the first of 75 million Baby Boomers become eligible for Medicare--you read that as geriatric care, the most expensive predictable healthcare there is--but Republicans want to strike all the improvements to Medicare and the rest of it. When you are old and need a big-ticket item like a bypass, hip replacement, or TPA therapy, do you really want your elected (GOP) officials leaving you at the mercy of corporate healthcare? Remember, these are the guys, starting with Tricky Dicky Nixon himself, that came up with rescission, capitation, and HMOs...
