If the GOP has their way, something like this could happen to YOU:

God forbid, one morning, you wake up with horrible crushing substernal chest pains. The EMS crew begins treating you right then and there at the scene. They bundle you off to the hospital, where the doctor takes one look at your EKG and orders a cardiac cath be done on you. You're already $5000 in the hole and more is coming. Your cath reveals a blocked coronary artery, and it is decided you need a bypass. While you're being prepped for surgery, they place you on multiple cardiac and other meds appropriate to your condition.

While you are sitting up there in CCU on a morphine drip, the billing department is calling your insurer, who ultimately will decide how much of this treatment they are going to actually pay for. Because your condition is a life-threatening one, the hospital isn't going to wait for your insurer to "authorize" your ambulance trip, ER visit, or any of the lifesaving and stabilizing treatments you've received so far. They are going to wheel you into the OR, knock you out, and do that $250,000 bypass you so desperately need.

After you come out of Recovery, and eventually get well enough to be discharged, you'll go home, where, still on ooglobs of meds and outpatient therapy, you'll get the shock that will ultimately kill you. A letter from the hospital will arrive in your mailbox, saying your insurance company has dropped your coverage (rescission!), refuses to pay for your treatment and surgery, and the hospital now wants half a million bucks from you. Your family can bury you in Potters' Field after that...

That's what the GOP wants for YOU.
