Draw your own conclusions. Much could have been done better; they didn't even steam clean the building's exterior.
Pictures attached; discuss. Sorry for any duplicate shots.
Njoy.

It would seem from your pictures that you still have to climb a short flight of stairs from the Broadway entrance to reach the shopping level. Do the handicapped have to use the Ft Washington Ave entrance?

The B'way entrance has no steps whatsoever. Two slow elevators; big mistake. Rather have two fast running escalators and stairway than very slow elevators prone to crowding and breakdowns. For escalators, people must go around the entire length of the bldg to the rear, walk up some stairs and then get the escalators. What nonsense! And after getting off the elevators which lead directly to the bus platforms on level 3, the would be rider must walk the length of the platform to the rear to get to the ticket counter and/ or machines. More nonsense.

The floor plans of the three levels are available through this page.
  • Three floor plans
  • .
    ---
The station is built on a slope downhill from Fort Washington Avenue to Broadway. Therefore, Level 1 is the not-yet-reopened underground MTA passageway from the A train's 175th Street station. Level 1 is also the Broadway entrance, leading immediately to two side-by-side elevators to Level 2 (if this leads to the retail arcade, not yet finished) and Level 3, where the elevators deposit the riders at the far east end of the bus loading platform.
    ---
Level 2 comes in from Fort Washington Avenue and meets a wide flight of steps, with perhaps a ramp to the left. At the top of the nine steps are two escalators, two elevators, and two rest rooms. Apparently, there is a departure board there. Retail space will make up the rest of Level 2, but I understand there are arguments over rents and the type of stores.
    ---
Level 3 shows a pair of elevators at the east end, 21 bus "gates" probably open to the winds off the Hudson, and an enclosed pavilion with chairs, restrooms, ticket windows, vending machines (probably only NJT), a departure board, and escalators and elevators down to Fort Washington Avenue and (further below) the subway.
    ---
I am making these judgments from Joe Caronetti's excellent photos and the three floor plans on the above link. As I have not visited the station, corrections are welcome.
    ---
Many thanks to J. Caronetti for excellent photos.

Thanx, Joe. Great observations there. BTW the P.A. did give out a free pamphlet with the diagrams & some fotos.
FYI when I arrived there, many many people who don't read stillattempted to climb those long stairs on 181 and Ft Washington, and also tried to enter the shack that was the temp. ticket office.
I stood there about 5 minutes directing people, as did MTA bus drivers from their windows as they were stopped at the light. Finally someone "official" came ans stood there giving directions.

In 1968, five years after the bus station opened, I lived near 54th Street in West New York. My parents lived on Marble Hill. Most of the time, I used Blvd East buses to access the PABT and rode the #1 train north. My attempts to use the George Washington Bridge Bus Station tended to cost extra time, mostly because of the long headways on scenic River Road. I explored several top-of-the-hill combinations, partly to get a sense of what happened to the old PSCT trolley right of ways.
    ---
Over the years since then, I occasionally looked in at the GWB Bus Station. To cut down on the wind that battered passengers waiting for buses on the island platforms, the PA asked the architect to make modifications to the butterfly wings above the third deck. Also, closed circle television was installed, so passengers could loiter standing in the waiting room and see their bus arrive at the platform. Services gradually left the vast 2nd floor (now to be leased out to retail stores, if they can be coaxed to rent), and the sole plus of the dingy terminal was the bust of Othmar Ammann. A few years ago, I assembled a list of routes, destinations, and frequency. I don't have numbers, but I think passenger traffic dwindled for several reasons: the choice of turnpike expresses directly to PABT; not getting a seat on the A train, and the grime of the pedestrian tunnel to 175th Street station. It would be interesting to learn the Manhattan destinations of the bus riders. Maybe it gets traffic by connecting Washington Heights with other communities of factories and Hispanic heritage in New Jersey.
    ---
Halfway between Broadway and Fort Washington Avenue, there was a driveway with stops for long-distance coaches. I think they also had a small waiting room.

Many thanks for posting a rush hour departure board in your first photo. It is pretty obvious that the most frequent NJT service is Route 186 to Dumont, a 40-minute trip, with 41 departures each weekday. The 186 seems to have rights to gate 15. Dumont apparently has no passenger rail service, just the busy CSX River Line on a single track.
    ---
The second most frequent NJT service would appear to be Route 171 to Paterson. It has only 23 departures per weekday. Was the previous company Intercity with a brown paint scheme? Route 171 may have serious competition from a van company between Washington Heights and Paterson.

Sort of "sleeping with the enemy", allowing the van service (Express Service) to be side by side with the NJT buses. Personally I took the vans to Teaneck for many years to visit friends. Now that I'm senior and can pay such fare, I'm back to NJT.

From the page you linked to:

"All levels of the bus station are connected by escalators and accessible elevators, making it easier for passengers with disabilities or mobility limitations to move through the station. A new ramp provides access to the elevator at the Fort Washington Avenue level. All bus gates are compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), removing barriers for passengers with disabilities to get on and off their buses conveniently. Passengers who require assistance no longer need to make arrangements with their carrier for separate pick-up and drop-off on Fort Washington Avenue."

Again looking at the rush hour departure board in J. Caronetti's helpful and clear first photo, I see a pair of NJT buses leaving for Hackensack Terminal on two separate routes, the shorter (36 minute) Route 182 and the longer (47 minute) Route 178. Going through Leonia, southern Teaneck, and Bogata, Route 182 appears to replace the #1 Hudson River Public Service trolley that connected the Edgewater Ferry with Hackensack. In a book, I may have seen a photo of a Hudson River trolley crossing Overpeck Creek or the Hackensack River, a short distance north of the way NJT Route 182 crosses both.
    ---
The joint 178-182 timetable shows 28 weekday departures from GWB on Route 178 and 26 departures on Route 182. Route 178 swings north of the watery terrain, visiting Englewood City Hall and wandering northern Teaneck. It crosses the Hackensack River on Cedar Lane.
    ---
Buses 178 and 182 do not share routes, but they begin and end at the same terminals, Hackensack and Washington Heights.

The Public Service 1 (Paterson-Edgewater) was replaced by what is now the NJT 770 (Paterson-Hackensack) and 751 (Paramus-Edgewater). The 182 is the Public Service 82 and had nothing to do with the old 1.

No buses cross the Cedar Lane/Anderson Street bridge between Teaneck and Hackensack. The 178 and 182 are both using the Court Street bridge along with the 168. The 175, 751, 753, 755, 772, and 780 use route 4.

Again inspecting that excellent photo of the departure board at rush hour, I see two routes that cross the GWB and immediately turn south to Hudson County. NJT Route 188 runs along the shore of the Hudson through Edgewater until River Road climbs the cliff at 60th Street, West New York. The bus crosses Boulevard East, Bergenline Avenue, and terminates at Kennedy Boulevard, alias Hudson Boulevard. This route has 18 departures daily, and the run takes 36 minutes. I think it was a Public Service route when I rode it in 1968.
    ---
With less service, 11 departures, none on Sunday, NJT 181 takes 50 minutes to reach Union City, at 49th Street and Bergenline Avenue. It may face serious competition from the vans from GWB marked Bergenline. Would this route be a successor to an Orange and Black line that passed their garage on Anderson Avenue? In Fairview, the 181 runs on Palisade Avenue. Corrections are welcome.
    ---
I notice that the NJT timetables for these lines displays a special fare from the GWB Bus Station to the Bridge Plaza in Fort Lee: $1.85 adult, 85 cents for seniors. When the bridge opened in October of 1931, the bus fare was a nickel, but pedestrians paid a dime! A couple of years later, the pedestrian toll was dropped to five cents.

The 181 and 188 came from the old Public Service routes 8 and 98. The 188 is pretty true to the 8 River Road as far as route. The 181 is a combination of the 98 Palisade Avenue and the 21 West New York. The 181 originally ran all the way down to Hoboken Terminal (from its 21 roots), but it was cut to 49th in Union City after HBLR opened. The 21 and original 181 ran fairly often, but only selected trips actually continued to the GWBBS... the majority ended in Fort Lee as the 21 did. That service was deemed redundant to the 84 and Academy/now-NJT 22, and only the handful of 181 trips that went to NY remain.

There were some unique short turns of the 8/98. There were three PM rush trips of the 98 that left GWBBS and only went as far as Edgewater, stopping at Winston Towers on the way. It would then return to GWBBS as a short 8, but would not stop at Winston. It is noted on the schedule that passengers could board the outbound short-turn 98 to go to New York and they would be transported on the 8 trip to NYC.

Thanks to kcram3500 for your explanations and the photos of the two timetables. The 1981 schedule for 21 - West New York shows the requirement for exact change, but the 2017 schedules for the interstate 181 and 188 declares that change will even be given on a twenty-dollar bill. Are most interstate lines "full service" lines?
    ---
Before 1940 there was a streetcar line that ran north through backyards in West New York, perhaps in the block between Hudson and Palisade Avenues. Does a replacement bus line (for the trolley) exist nowadays in some form?
    Thanks.

The 21 did not go into New York... it ended at Anderson and Columbia in Fort Lee. All the local routes in eastern Hudson County were exact-change by that time.

There are some interstate lines that are exact-change - most notably for their distance, the 107 and 108, and the 126 which serves as a rail link between Hoboken Terminal and PABT.

All full-service routes do accept $20s (except for when leaving NYC) because it would be too difficult to determine which full-service routes should and shouldn't based on their fares. The 137 from Toms River to NY is currently $21.25 one-way full fare, so accepting $20s means less paper for the driver to handle. The 197 from Warwick is $15.00, so handing a $20 means a simple return of a $5 or five $1s - again, less paper.

Looking again at the departure board in the first photo, Rockland Coaches (Coach USA) seems to visit Gate 1 about hourly, with 16 departures on weekdays, and 10 daily departures on weekends. Mid-day, it seems that five trips from PABT visit the GW Bridge station. Route 9 and its variations mostly terminate at the New City Route 304 Park and Ride, a large bus shelter (no seats) at a parking lot. On weekdays, while 16 trips receive passengers at the new GW Bridge Station, I count about 115 trips leaving PABT at 41st Street for destinations in Bergen and Rockland Counties. Other Rockland terminals seem to be Palisades Center Mall, Nanuet Mall, and Mount Ivy.
    ---
Rockland Coaches has been using George Washington Bridge for more than eighty years. The New York Times, February 19, 1934, page 34, lists these bus firms being allowed to increase fares (mostly by five cents) between Bergen County and Washington Heights: PSCT, Hill Bus Company, Rockland Coach Company, Spring Valley Bus Company, and the Washington Bridge Express Line.

    ---
The Facebook page of RedAndTanCoachUsa appears alive with recent delays and trip cancellations reported.

Rockland coaches used to run all of its service over the GWB. Some service ran via manhattan streets to midtown. They have recently been cutting many of their routes, and transferred most of their remaining routes to operate via the Port Authority Bus Terminal. They recently cut the 11C, 14K and 20/84 routes. Saddle River took over the 11C, although with major service reductions and also the 20/84. I many old GWB timetables posted on my blog:

My thoughts exactly. The signage especially is reminiscent of the PA style at LGA and JFK.

Is this a preview of what a PABT renovation might look like? Hoping their main gateway gets an update (even if only the Greyhound area).

When a bus at gates 1 to 10 is ready to leave with its passengers, I presume the driver must go east and loop the terminal to finally u-turn and head for the bridge. How far east is the u-turn? There was a parking deck between Broadway and Wadsworth Avenue that shows some clutter of construction material.
    ---
    J. Caronetti's 15th photo shows a PTR (Paterson) van drop off point at gate 9 near a Broadway elevator. Is the u-turn there, or do the buses cross a bridge over Broadway before looping?
    Thanks.

Taking a final look at the departure board in the top photo, I see that Ameribus (Saddle River Tours) leaves from Gate 2. On route 11C to Spring Valley, NY, there are seven weekday departures, four on Saturday, and three on Sunday. Route 20/84 provides five departures on weekdays to Tappan, NY.
    ---
NJT Route 175 to Ridgewood offers 27 weekday departures from gate 13.
    ---
If my math is correct, there are 174 NJT departures on weekdays, plus 16 by Rockland Coach and 12 by Ameribus, for a total of 202, plus the van trips.
    ---
I don't know about Gates 3 to 8. Maybe some are for arrivals. Some gates on that side appear blocked by concrete barriers and parked police cars. The vans seem to use Gates 9, 10, 20, and 21, the furthest east from the waiting room, at the elevators to Broadway. My descriptions may have errors. I don't know when I'll get to visit the station. Many thanks to J. Caronetti for the tour through excellent photos.
