The 181 and 188 came from the old Public Service routes 8 and 98. The 188 is pretty true to the 8 River Road as far as route. The 181 is a combination of the 98 Palisade Avenue and the 21 West New York. The 181 originally ran all the way down to Hoboken Terminal (from its 21 roots), but it was cut to 49th in Union City after HBLR opened. The 21 and original 181 ran fairly often, but only selected trips actually continued to the GWBBS... the majority ended in Fort Lee as the 21 did. That service was deemed redundant to the 84 and Academy/now-NJT 22, and only the handful of 181 trips that went to NY remain.

There were some unique short turns of the 8/98. There were three PM rush trips of the 98 that left GWBBS and only went as far as Edgewater, stopping at Winston Towers on the way. It would then return to GWBBS as a short 8, but would not stop at Winston. It is noted on the schedule that passengers could board the outbound short-turn 98 to go to New York and they would be transported on the 8 trip to NYC.
