If you haven't already gotten pretty much to the crosswalk by the time I step out into the street I expect you to yield to me. The light says Walk and I'm walking. If you aim your wheels at me without stopping immediately you are driving recklessly. |

But if a pedestrian proceeds too, then you have to stop and let them go, whether they delayed proceeding for 2 seconds, or 5, or 10. You NEVER have the right of way over them when you are turning. So the normal thing to do is proceed forward right away. Then if you can turn and go through the crosswalk without coming near anyone, do so. But if by the time you are ready to tun into the crosswalk you are going to be aiming for someone or having a near miss, stop until the coast is clear. At worst you will be able to proceed when the light turns green for the crossing direction. |

And then there are those who don't understand how to turn sharply: they turn left from a 1-way street onto a 2-way avenue driving through the crosswalk lengthwise as they go. |

You presumably:(1) are the first car in line and (2) have been waiting at this light for most the cycle's duration (otherwise you wouldn't be the first car) So you already know the locations of any potential obstacles since you've probably been assessing the situation for several minutes. If there's pedestrians waiting to cross or someone speeding down the crossroad, you wait, otherwise, good2go! The other possibility is a bike trying to sneak by you to your right, but unless there is a bike lane you just gotta get in the habit of hugging the curb (so that they can't come up next to you while you're stopped). |
