Probably because he was aggressive and timid at the same time. I see drivers like that all the time. They neither proceed forward when they have the chance to do so nor do they stop when the see a pedestrian a car length ahead of them.

I think I figured it out. This is what I think happened:

0 seconds: Light turns green, pedestrians get "walk." Pedestrians do not go, whether because they do not notice the sign or they are not sure if they want to go, or whatever. BrooklynBus waits at stop bar rather than proceeding to crosswalk threshold.

+2 seconds (or so): BrooklynBus decides to go, but so do the pedestrians. BrooklynBus does not think of the crosswalk threshold as a yielding location and so ends up in the crosswalk, encountering the pedestrians there. He stops short right there, meaning the pedestrians have to work around him.

It's all speculation of course but this is my only way so far of making sense of this.

West 42nd Street westbound right onto 8th Ave is no right turn from 7 AM to 7 PM, except buses.

It's not that intersection. The only intersection I know is southbound 7th Ave onto 34th Street but that's no turns (no left or right) 8 AM to 8 PM everyday.

Yes. No one started to cross until I went into my turn after waiting two seconds for them to begin. edf40wrjww2msgDetailB:detailStr

For the third time, I started making the right turn when after two seconds after the signal changed not one pedestrian started crossing, so I assumed I had the right of way. Once I started turning and was partially blocking the crosswalk, pedestrians started crossing in front of me outside the crosswalk. So by the time I came to a full stop in order not to hit them, I was fully blocking the crosswalk. At that point in time, others started crossing behind my vehicle. After about 10 or 15 seconds when I was stopped and counted 20 people crossing in front of me, they finally allowed me to continue and get out of their way at which time the remainder of the pedestrians crossed normally within the crosswalk.

My point was that since they did not start crossing on time and if they allowed me the two seconds to get out of the intersection, they could have crossed normally. But they were too impatient. And most here accuse drivers of being the impatient ones.

It just amazes me that not a single one of you will admit I did nothing wrong and that the pedestrians were wrong. And that so many of you say you can't understand what happened or say I keep changing my story which is not true. It also amazes me that this incident that took under one minute has been discussed for a month because you are all trying to make it appear that I am in the wrong.

This is only continuing because no wants to admit the pedestrians were wrong and what I did was correct and prudent. I gave pedestrians smoke time to start crossing, yet those here claim I was wrong and immediately shoukd have started turning. If I did, I still would have been wrong because they would say I failed to give the pedestrians the right of way.

Many here would say that you should have stopped at the crosswalk threshold. That is the point of yielding. Between the stop bar and the crosswalk threshold you still have time to decide to yield at the crosswalk threshold without blocking the crosswalk.

As I stated, when I entered the crosswalk, they started crossing about a car length in front of me just outside the crosswalk forcing me to make a quick stop so I could stop just before hitting them. Since I was going less than 10 mph, I was able to stop in time. So when I stopped, they were just in front of me and I was blocking the entire crosswalk because of them. The alternative to not stopping would have been to hit them.

Admit the pedestrians were wrong already for heaven's sake.

A pedestrian who entered the intersection on a walk light is never wrong. It's that simple.

You stated it was way greater than five feet as I suggested. Of course you wou, don't give any number. So how about a range for more than one case? Or will you weasel out of that also as I expect. You always claim I am wrong, but you won't commit yourself to a specific response so someone can challenge you.

So I am not asking for a specific example and pretend it is representative. I am asking for a range.

There is no way you can protect yourself from bad drivers and anticipate every possibility.

When on a highway, are you never supposed to drive in the left lane because of the possibility someone going the other way may unexpectedly jump the divider? Are you never supposed to drive behind a flatbed truck because sone cargo may become dislodged?

You are being ridiculous because you can't protect yourself from every situation.

If I would have started to immediately turn, you would complain I cut off the pedestrians by not allowing them to cross first. You would have stated that with so many pedestrians waiting, I should have known they intended to cross the street. No matter what I would have done, you still would have insisted I was wrong.
