Replaced by White 1140's which were lemons. FACCO sold them off in 1960 to Memphis when their fishbowls arrived.

Where can I find a picture of a FACCO fishbowl?

Not exactly true. The Route 5 Queen Marys (Model 735) were replaced with GM 5104s that lasted into the MABSTOA era. The Whites (only 8 of them), along with 25 Mack C50s, did replace the Queen Marys (Model 720)that ran on the #15 Jackson Heights route, which saw its last double decks in early 1952. It is true that both the Whites and Macks on the #15, based at Jackson Heights garage, were not successful buses.

I also recall a number of smaller GMs like TDH 4509s also operating on the FACCO routes after the double decks were retired. Although you describe the C50s as not successful, they remained in service into the early 1960s, being transferred to the FACCO subsidiary, Surface Transit. When I was younger, I used to enjoy riding home to Wash Hts on the upper deck of a Queen Mary especially during Christmas time when I could get a good view of the Rockefeller Center Christmas tree. I don’t recall the Whites, but since you say there were only 8 of them, that would explain why I probably never saw one.

Not exactly true. The C-50's were the first buses to replace the 1936 YC 720 Queen Mary's on Rt 15 Jackson Heights in 1951. FACCO planned to replace all the remaining Queen Marys (Model 735's from 1938) in 1952 with GMC 5104's.There was such a public outcry of no more double deckers that FACCO decided to keep a few on Rt. 5 short turn service.
They ran from 57 St & 5 Av to 135 St. & Broadway along Riverside Drive. But they didn't want any on Fifth Avenue because they were too slow boarding.By 1953, FACCO decided to end all double decker service and they were replaced by Whites, which were assigned exclusively to Rt.15.By 1954 Omnibus Corporation sold FACCO to local interests and used the money to form Hertz Corporation, the rental car business. In 1958 the Mack C-50's were transferred to Surface Transit and the White 1140's were sold off in 1960.

That's correct. During the 1953-1959 period, the 5104s provided most service on Route 5, along with additional 4506, 4507, and 4508 buses. The 4506s were most common on Route 3, the 4507 were most common on Route 4, and the 4509s dominated Route 2. This pattern began to change in 1959 and 1960 when the 5106s and the New Look Fishbowls appeared.

The Whites only ran on Route 15, so if you were in Washington Heights you would never have seen them.

The FACO C50s generally ran on the M104 Broadway route sfter transfer from FACO. They joined the other Surface Transit Mack diesels based at Amsterdam Depot.

Exactly. The 4506's, 4507's were used on those particular lines because they replaced the open top double deckers. The 4509's replaced the remaining closed tops (except Queen Marys) and most pre- war single deckers (used for crosstown routes). The C-50's were specially not included in the City condemnation takeover in 1962 and were scraped by Fifth Avenue.

I wasn’t aware that the city did not acquire the C-50s. as for not seeing the Whites on rte 15, I would often see the C-50s passing by while waiting fat 34 St for a bus the Wash Hts, so it might have been possible to see a White even though I never did. It’s a shame about the C-50s since when visiting my cousin in Tudor City, I used to like to get one of them to go across 42 St.

There were only 7 Whites and I think they only ram on weekdays, so they were a rare sight.
