Dozens of NJ bus lines are long gone. Just in Jersey city alone Bergen Ave line, Central Ave, Greenville Lafayette, North and South Hudson county boulevard lines. Downtown bus line, Drogin bus line, Marion bus line, Red and Tan bus line. And many many more around the state.

Orange & Black, Intercity, Warwick Stages, and Northeast Coach Lines were all purchased by TNJ in 1974 and consolidated under the Maplewood Equipment Company name (Maplewood NJ was TNJ's headquarters). The O&B garage is still in use as NJT Fairview. NJT also used the last Intercity garage (Madison Avenue in Paterson) and the Warwick garage in Warwick NY - they were both replaced by Wayne.

Yes, there was a well-managed family operation connecting Asbury Park and Manhattan, with its garage somewhere along NJ 35, Keyport more or less, or maybe Matawan. It may be the one I recall as Rollo (family name).
---
To my mind, the Academy desk inside the Cheesequake Service Area is a direct descendant of this operation, which competed with both the CNJ and the PRR.

Asbury Park-New York Transit was the name - they had a blue and cream paint scheme. They received Flx suburbans from the state in 1976, and MC-9s in the 80s before Academy bought the system and merged it with their NY-Keansburg-Long Branch operation.

The link below goes to a page with several photos, with one showing three buses at a terminal marked Greyhound and also "N.Y. Buses." I would not be surprised if the first and third buses are Asbury Park to N.Y. I cannot read the words on the buses.
  • Bus Station in Asbury Park

  • ---
I would guess the date somewhere 1928-1940, but some people on this board should be able to give the model and year of the buses.

Lincoln Transit was a private company that ran pool with PSCT/TNJ/NJT between NY and Cape May on the US9 routes. Lincoln ran as far north from NY as Montreal, and operated one daily through trip each way from Atlantic City to Montreal via NYC. LT went under in the mid 80s, and NJT assumed all US9 service until Suburban Trails began to compete with the 139 in 1987.

Everything from the first P700s to the last 700Bs were in that pic. They were asked to bring about 5000 conventioneers from NJ to DC, and at that time, only PS had the fleet size to pull that off.

Detroit 6-71s and 6V-71s were well known for those oil leaks. Had nothing to do with "blowing them out" on the highway... the 6-71 was standard equipment on the PD4104 and they leaked the same way.

I remember the PD4104 for their stench. Perhaps the 6-71 was leakier than the 6V-71 ?

When I visited Yellowstone Park in 2010, they still had 8 MC-5C's (the ones that had an MC8 rear end). They were about 33 years old and am pretty sure they had 6V-71's.

Being a straight-6, the 6-71 only had one valve cover, while the 6V71 had two - but the inboard side of the 6V would just shoot oil all over the engine compartment and firewall.

At that point in time, they were the same... GMC bus, Detroit engine - both General Motors. That was what you lived with on those old 2-strokers. The 71- and 92-series engines were only killed off by the tougher emissions regs of the early 90s... otherwise, operators just accepted those oil leaks as a cost of doing business because the engines were otherwise very reliable.

Yes, the oil leaks and vast differences in performance from one engine to another was just a cost of doing business until Penske took over Detroit Diesel in a 1988 deal. But by that time the emissions regulations saw the end of the two stroke engines. All the computer controls in the world couldn't overcome the inherent dirtiness that two strokes made, and US production stopped in 1995. But they were, when properly built and maintained, very good bus engines for power on demand, low cost and reliability.

Rockland/R&T merged the 25 with the 11C in 1992 running it through New Milford and Bergenfield. Rockland/R&T discontinued the 11C last year and Saddle River Tours took it over operating it at greatly reduced service. I'm actually surprised they have continued running the 2-4 weekend trips. I don't believe ridership is very high.
