Those at Queens Surface stayed 'til about '91 or so. The Grummans at GBL and TCC quietly left too, but I think the MCI Classics actually pushed them out. |

City as in NYCTA?David Gunn, president of NYCTA decided to prematurely remove them from service. The City of New York had no input as MTA, the parent agency, is a state entity. They were no worse than the RTS because some of them burnt up prematurely too. I specificially a 1982 RTS, I believe the # was 1633 a Staten island unit, that was destroyed by fire, stored at Fesh Pond Yard for years, keeping company with older beese that had faithfully served out their careers. David Gunn did not like Grummans, he wasn't in charge when they were ordered, and he wanted them out. He may have bought subway equipment into a state of good repair, but deep down he was a power freak. He is the reason why we have so many superintendants in NYCT, they're a dime a dozen, falling all over each other. I long for the old days when the dispatcher was in charge and he told the trainmaster what he did. But I digress into SubChat territory. |

David Gunn did not like Grummans, he wasn't in charge when they were ordered, and he wanted them out.I'm not sure it was a matter of Gunn not liking the Grummans - as WMATA chief about ten years later, he OK'd the ordering of Flxible Metros. I think what it was is that he was new to the NYCT job, he wanted to make a splash coming in, and the Grummans were a convenient scapegoat. The A-frame problem had been solved and the fire that convinced Gunn to pull the fleet was later found to have been caused by deficient maintenance, not a design defect. |

I always thought that was more about politics than anything else. Anyone around New York in those days knows that NYCTA maintenance practices were horrible. The fact that the PBL Grumman 870s kept rolling along with some at MSBA and eventually 620 of the ex-NYCTA/MaBSTOA Grummans at NJTransit is more than convincing that the TA made a moronic move in dumping the Grummans. I still remember the NYDaily News direct quote from (then) Mayor Koch - "Junk The Junk".I think the Grumman 870s (with their issues) were truly no worse than those early NYCTA RTS. |

And, like I said in the past, Gunn himself was quoted as saying there are many in the industry that feel the RTS is not such a hot bus. Then came issues with RTS wheels coming off, rear doors opening during runs, and of course, the sealed windows. It was soooo ironic that when Gunn went to DC, his best buses were the Flxibles. jrc |

The PBLs regularly used their local buses on express routes, especially the newer buses. In fact with TCC, their 03 series RTS and GMDD fishbowls spent most of their years doing only express service. |

Bill, I recall, 1625 burning to the ground out in Staten Island [Yukon]never turned a wheel in service, I have photos of it & it also took 1 or 2 others [ Fishbowls / Flex's] with it. There also was a 9000 series Flex [ 9078 ? ] that burned up while under warranty that sat out at Linden Yard, for many years in the corner closest to the hot dog stand, I have shots of that one as well, in fact that's why 199 Grumman, became the T.A.'s property, it was the warranty replacement for the 9000. |

I understand that you as a B/O who drove the Grumman Flxibles didn't like them. But, the TA was alleging that the buses were unfit for duty on NYC. I call it BS because the PBLs were able to operate their Grummans (which were an add-on to the TA's order) for years. No one doubts that Grumman was at-fault for the A-frame issues, but that other stuff is on the TA. |

Bill,1625 also burned up at YUK and was stored right next to 1633 in FP Storage. I shot slides of both of them. Other burn-ups were 3293 (took out Blitz 5304 & Flx 9273 with it inside HUD Depot), 3315, 3548, 3702, 4396, 8075 (fire caused by 3548 inside GH Depot), 9656 (twice). If I missed any, feel free to add them! FYI, David Gunn screwed up every transit system he got his hands on! Did you know he is personally responsible at SEPTA for getting rid of any commuter train service that wasn't electric? In 1981 he wiped out the entire ex-Reading line from Philly all the way to Pottsville, PA (via Reading)??? That's why the highways into Philly are so clogged up to this day!!! |

Linden Shop / yard, was a dual purpose place for many years. They did track panels along with bus scrapping & other minor work. Buses were stored in the yard. I have photos of 1000's, 2000's, 3000's & 5000's & the 9000 [9078 ?] that caught fire out in that yard. In fact, I have a photo of now Museum fishbowl # 100 outside in the yard, without windows being stripped because they had decided to make # 1 the Museum Bus, but when they started to work on # 1, they discovered that the chassis was rotted out beyond repair and they went looking for another candidate and the shop foreman @ Linden told them that they had #100 there, it runs & all that we have done is take all the windows out. They reinstalled the windows and the next day # 100 was driven over to ENY base shop. |

I was in NYC in June 1994, and I saw a Grumman operating for JBL, but I had no idea that they lasted that long afterwards (I did not see any during my 1999 visit).By comparison, SCRTD got rid of their last ones in mid-1993, though the disposition started around 1989 or 1990. Around mid-1990, RTD sold 9 Grummans to Gardena Municipal Bus Lines, who used them solely for school trippers. They lasted at Gardena until 1995. Santa Monica got rid of their 1979 Grummans fairly quickly (mid-80s), but their 1981 models lasted until the early 90s. Orange County had some from 1978 and disposed of theirs fairly quickly as well (saw one used in an episode of "Hunter" around 1987 or 1988, another one (or the same one?) was parked behind the Scientology building on Hollywood Blvd for years. |
