I always thought that was more about politics than anything else. Anyone around New York in those days knows that NYCTA maintenance practices were horrible. The fact that the PBL Grumman 870s kept rolling along with some at MSBA and eventually 620 of the ex-NYCTA/MaBSTOA Grummans at NJTransit is more than convincing that the TA made a moronic move in dumping the Grummans. I still remember the NYDaily News direct quote from (then) Mayor Koch - "Junk The Junk".I think the Grumman 870s (with their issues) were truly no worse than those early NYCTA RTS. |
