Well for starters, the "15" route at 54th St became the M32 I believe.

Also, from what I was told some runs on that route branched off to that "16" Elmhurst Crosstown, which became the Q89.

That route was a "WTF" route in my opinion but I'm sure someone here would disagree...like anyone from Elmhurst.

That sounds about right. Since I was born in the 60s, I didn't really start knowing the routes and depots until the mid 70s at the earliest. I do know some stuff had moved around by then. For instance, M8, M11, M14, M16, M21, M26 were at Hudson depot. I never knew the Bx30 ever operated from AMS. I do remember it being at 146th (OFS) until it was combined with the old Bx31 to from today's Bx19.

At Coliseum:

The 5A later became Bx54
The 17 (today's Bx26) used to be 15C
There was also the 15B which became Bx19 and later eliminated.
Also the 15A became later it was extended to Co-Op City became Bx6 (now Bx30).

This is how I remember the other Bronx routes when I was a kid in the 70s.

Kingsbridge

1 Concourse-138th Street
2 Concourse Hub
3 Prospect Ave (now Bx17)
4 Bainbridge Ave (now Bx34)
10 (now Bx7)
11
20 Bronx Park-Van Cortlandt (now Bx9)
24 Bailey Ave
34 163 Street Crosstown (now Bx6)
35 167 Street Crosstown
37 Ogden Ave (now Bx13
38 University Ave (now Bx3)
41 Webster Ave

And of course the Bx55

West Farms

25 Morris Jerome Ave (now Bx32)
26 Boston Rd Morris Park Ave (now Bx21)
27 Clason Point
28 Williamsbridge (now Bx39)
29 Third Ave Willis Ave (now Bx15)
31 Southern Blvd (combined with 30 to from today's Bx19)
32 St Anns Ave (eliminated)
33 138 Street Crosstown
36 180 Street Crosstown

Even later when the borough prefixes were added to the rollsigns... West Farms signs had some reading that I could never figured out. They were:

1 Shorehaven, 2 Shorehaven and 3 Shorehaven

This list is not the original MABSTOA assignment sheet, which was in 1962 when MABSTOA was created. This looks like the 1970-72 period when many routes were reassigned from the original Fifth Ave. Coach or Surface Transit depots. By this time most of the buses were GMC 5303s and most of the old look GMs were gone (a few were still on the 132nd St. Depot routes).

Nice job on this. I remember these routes and their garage assignments. Was living in Manhattan at the time so I saw these buses every day.

Would the 16 from Coliseum be today's Bx41 and the 17 Allerton be today's Bx26?

Also, the 23 was later combined with the 8. As for the 18, was that combined with the 49, or was the 49 something else?

Thanks, but that list just begets more questions.

You are correct. When Mabstoa came into creation in Sept (?) 1962 they still used the old FACC and STS garages.

I remember that the FACC routes 15 and 16 used a depot on Northern Blvd and 77th Street (?) near the 82nd and Northern Terminus. I believe that the depot became a car dealership after Mabstoa pulled out.

Also they kept the # 15 designation for a while, then it became the M32, now Q32

The old 16 became Bx16 which had it north terminal at Mundy Ln & Pitman. Later it was combined with the old Bx14 to form today's Bx16.

Today's Bx41 is pretty much the same except N/B buses continued on WPR to 241 Street then right on 241st to Baychester Ave. It would layover there and then make a u-turn for the S/B trip.

Yes, the 17 Allerton Ave (which was originally 15C) is today's Bx26.

Yes, you're correct with the 23 and 8 combining to form today's Bx8.

The 49 operated from the old Morrisania Hospital to 161st-River Ave. The service was eliminated. The 18, IIRC is pretty much the same as today's Bx18.

Correct, Fifth Avenue route "15" became the M32 which is now the Q32.
As for the "16" later Q89, I never knew this route existed until I seen this route listed in a book of street listings I once had. The only time I recall seeing a bus running the Q89 was around 1980 or so using RTS 2222. I have no information on ridership totals but I can assume it was light.

Ridership on the Q89 (From Northern Blvd and 82nd St across 82nd St to Queens Blvd) consisted of 3 regular women in the morning, and the self proclaimed Mayor of Elmhurst, who rode to check up on the line!
Other riders were idiots that got on on 82nd St thinking it was an M32, and screamed when the bus didn't turn on Roosevelt Ave! LOL

Bx-24 (Bailey Ave.) was eliminated due to lack of ridership and horrendous service.
First bus was about 7:45 AM, last bus 4:45 PM (M-F). Headway was 36 minutes rush hours, 48 minutes midday.
Saturday, first bus 10 AM, last bus 4:30 PM, with headway 48 minutes.
No Sunday service.
It ran from W. 256 St. - Fieldston Rd. to Fordham Plaza.
Bus stop signs stated that the no standing regulation was only in effect Monday-Saturday 7 AM to 7 PM. You were able to park in the Bx-24 bus stops all other times.

I remember taking this bus when I was younger, they should bring it back and run it past the mall on 225 St with better headways. I'm sure more people would use it compared to the Bx20

I think it was more so the headways than a lack of riders that did the route in. You can't possibly try and wait for a bus with those headways.

Fifth Avenue Rt 16 Elmhurst Crosstown was always a remote and lighly used route. It was mainly for residents of Elmhurst to transfer to Rt 15 to Manhattan. When NYC Municipal Airport (now LaGuardia) opened in 1940 it was extended to the airport. It ran ther until 1942 when all service on the 16 was suspended to conserve fuel and rubber for the war effort. When the 16 returned in 1945, the airport extension did not.It, along with the 15 were housed in the Fifth Avenue garage built on Northern & 77 St in Jackson Heights in 1925 when service began. When MABSTOA took over in 1963 it closed Jackson Heights garage and all 15 & 16 buses were transferred to 54 St., causing
alot of deadheading for 16.About 1983 the rt designation was change to Q89. It was planned to extend the line to Queens Blvd & 63 Dr, a major shopping area, but it never happened. It was discontinued in 1988, along with other TA bus cutbacks.

Thanks for the great little history of a nearly forgotten little bus route. Just one little correction - the 16 became the Q89 on July 1, 1974, during the renumbering of many MaBSTOA lines to eliminate duplication (three 15s in Manhattan) and bus routes with letter suffixes such as the M101A (M102), Bx5A (Bx54) and several others. It was also when the 15 became the M32 and the Triborough Bridge TB routes became M35 and Bx21.

Just for the record, MaBSTOA was formally created by an act of the New York State Legislature this date 50 years ago back then on March 19, 1962. After the City of New York made condemnation proceedings in taking over the physical properies, equipment and fleets of Fifth Avenue Coach and Surface Transit, regular service operations started slowly to begin about four days later.

After all routes got borough prefix designations in 1972, but before the 1974 route numbering changes, the Fifth Avenue/Jackson Heights #15 got designated as QM15 (due to the twin M15's of [NYCTA] First and Second Avenues and [MaBSTOA ex NYCO] 23rd Street crosstown), but that turned out to be duplicative of then-Green Bus Lines', now MTA's, Woodhaven/Lindenwood QM15 route; while the Elmhurst crosstown #16 was designated Q16 which was itself another duplication, as Q16 then as now is the TA's Fort Totten route.

That the #16/Q16/Q89's ridership total was "light" is why that route no longer exists anymore.

From 1972 to 1974, the Jackson Heights #15 was designated QM15 which, besides the route numbering triplications of that number, was on top of it all duplicative of the designation of the then-Green Bus Lines' Woodhaven and Lindenwood route (now operated by MTA); while the Elmhurst crosstown #16 would have been Q16 in that duration, which duplicated the nomenclature of NYCTA's Fort Totten route. Small wonder why, on July 1, 1974, (QM)15 became M32 and (Q)16 became Q89.

As for the TB's (which initials, besides signifying the Triborough Bridge, also had unfortunate connotations with the dread disease tuberculosis), it was actually split three ways: besides M35 and Bx21, there was also M34 (not to be confused with today's 34th Street crosstown ex M16 which, pre-1972, was duplicated by the Elmhurst crosstown - talk about ironies!)

If I have my facts correct, the Jackson Hts Garage was not a true garage but rather an open yard where buses were stored. The reason MABSTOA closed it was that it was not owned by FACCO but leased and apparently there was some sort of city regulation that prohibited the city (which actually owned the NYCTA facilities at the time) from leasing property so the lease was terminated and the buses transferred to 54 St Depot. AFAIK, something similar but in reverse took place with regard to the NYCTA Manhattan “garage.” Until the creation of MABSTOA, the Manhattan depot was also an open yard where NYCTA buses were stored. The present Manhattan Garage was the former STS Central Bronx depot where certain routes like the Bx 1 and Bx 2 came out of. When MABSTOA as an NYCTA subsidiary took over the former FACCO and STS facilities, it transferred the STS routes out of the newly acquired Central Bronx depot and took over the depot as a true garage for the NYCTA Manhattan Div buses.

Bring back the Q89 along Linden Blvd. but send it to many of the subways in Jamaica terminating at the AIRTRAIN LIRR"E" "J" Subway Station instead of to the 165th Street Terminal. On the eastern end extend the Q89 route should have went along Linden Blvd. into Rockaway Blvd. (instead of down Lincoln Street) to the "A" Line Rockaway Blvd. Station. The Q89 should then travel down Cross Bay Blvd. to the Conduit Blvd. into Linden Blvd., Brooklyn to Cleveland Street/Ashford Street and terminate at the New Lots Avenue Subway Station.

Well, is the Q53 ridership between Elmhurst and Jackson Heights made up of people seeking only to get between those destinations or is it made up of people from Rego Park, Forest Hills, and all of the other neighborhoods down to the Rockaways looking for a direct ride to Woodside? I haven't been on that bus lately to observe boardings / alightings.

I think we're talking about the first Q89, the one that connected Elmhurst to Jackson Heights, not the one with roots in the old Q9A.

I'm coming out of Rockaway and getting off at Queens Center Mall. The Q53 practically empties out at the mall. However, it would fill right back up.

On my way back to Rockaway, when the Q53 would arrive at the mall, it would be packed. Most of the passengers would get off then a whole lot more would pile in. Another irony is, unlike the Q89, the Q53 is limited stops only. Unless something changed, it's only 3 stops from the mall to Jackson Heights.

You are welcome. I would like to add that the garage was built new in 1925 when FACCO routes 15 & 16 were started and it was demolished when the new bank was built in the 1960's.

Its limited nature might be why it's so busy. People are likely using it as a round trip with the subway as the other half :).

The heavy ridership didn't start until approximately 8 years ago. I can only guess as to why the increase.

1st they changed it from an express to a limited,

2nd it now stops at Elmhurst Hospital,

3rd the fare was decreased,

4th added ability to transfer to/from other buses/subway

Granted 3rd and 4th happened years ago, the Q89 was discontinued earlier.

Which Q89? The former Q9A or the old Elmhurst Crosstown?

What was the route of the Elmhurst Crosstown?

The Elmhurst crosstown Q89 (Mk I) started out as route #16, operated originally by FACCo. I have since found out - via an eBay sale of a 1972-73 side rollsign of MaBSTOA routes - that the designation up to 1974 was actually QM16 - yet another duplication, as that was also the name of then-Green Bus Lines', now MTA Bus', express bus service from Neponsit to Midtown. Apparently the second Q89 was what had been Q9A.

FACCO/MABSTOA 16 was redesignated Q89. never QM89. When it was resdesignated Q89, there were plans to extend it to 63 Dr, which would have provided direct service to Macy*s, Queens Center Mall and Alexander's. But this extension was never implemented There are Blitz vinyl roll signs showing 63 Dr.
Concerning the Green Bus Line designation, the Q9A was Lincoln Street, a local line. The OM16 was the Rockaway Mark-Manhattan Express

The route of the Elmhusrt Crosstown was (southbound) starting at 82 St & Northern Blvd, 82 St, Baxter Av, Broadway to Queens Blvd. Northbound- starting at Queens Blvd & Broadway, Broadway, Baxter Av, 83 St, 37 Av, 81 St to Northern Blvd.
Another interesting point, from 1940 to 1942 the Elmhurst Crosstown was extended to LaGuardia Airpot via 32 Av and Junction Blvd. Apparently not successful, the extension was discontinued.

The termination point of the former(Elmhurst) Q89 at Broadway/Queens Blvd. would be a great location to end the current Q88 route instead of ending the Q88 route at the Queens Center Mall. This would then allow current Q58 passengers to transfer to the Q88 route at Grand Avenue/Broadway/Queens Blvd. Right now these transferring passengers have to remain on the Q58 route (along Corona Avenue) to later transfer to the Q88 route at 108th Street/Horace Harding Expressway causing delays in there trip plus overcrowding on the Q58 route through Corona Avenue.

No, no. I'll try to explain. When the TA and MaBSTOA began assigning borough prefices to all bus routes in 1972, the Elmhurst Crosstown, heretofore #16, became QM16. This, despite it not traveling through Manhattan, because: a) it was a MaBSTOA route, and b) it was based out of 54th Street depot in Manhattan, as was (QM)15 (later M32, now Q32). The QM16 moniker was duplicative of Green Bus lines' Rockaway-to-Manhattan express (just as QM15 had been to GBL's Lindenwood-to-Manhattan express), thus the Elmhurst crosstown QM16 becoming Q89 in 1974.

That lineup, as 'Andy' noted on July 22, 2009, would have been between 1969 and 1972 - 1969 when 101A was inaugurated, 1972 after 12th Street depot closed and Hudson Pier depot opened (leading to yet other route reassignments). As of April 1968 the roster for MaBSTOA's Manhattan Division would have been as follows:

132 Street Depot

3 Fifth & Convent/St. Nicholas (now the M3)
4 Fifth & Fort Washington Avenues (now the M4)
5 Fifth Avenue & Riverside Drive (now split between M5 & M55)
11 Ninth & Amsterdam Avenues (now the M11)
(10 Broadway - ?)

54 Street Depot

6 Broadway-Seventh & Avenue of Americas (Sixth Avenue) (later the M6; since eliminated)
13 8th Street Crosstown (now the M8)
15 Jackson Heights (now the Q32)
15 23 Street Crosstown (now the M23)
16 Elmhurst Crosstown (Queens, later the Q89; since eliminated)
16 34 Street Crosstown (now the M34)
20 57 Street Crosstown (now the M57)
103 59 Street Crosstown (eliminated)
106 42 Street Crosstown (now the M42)

100 Street Depot

6 72 Street Crosstown (now the M72)
17 79 Street Crosstown (now the M79)
18 86 Street Crosstown (now the M86)
19 96 Street Crosstown (now the M96)
20 116 Street Crosstown (now the M116)
101 Third-Lexington & Amsterdam Avenues (now the M101)
107 106 Street Crosstown (now the M106)
TB Triborough Bridge (now the M35)

146 Street Depot

1 Fourth & Madison Avenues (now the M1)
2 Fifth-Madison & Lenox Avenues (eliminated)
2A Fifth-Madison & Seventh Avenues (now the M2)
7 Broadway-Columbus & Lenox Avenues (now the M7)
10 Eighth Avenue & Central Park West (now split between M10 & M20)

Amsterdam Depot

30 149 Street Crosstown (now the Bx19)
100 Broadway-Kingsbridge
104 Broadway

12 Street Depot

12 Spring & Delancey Streets (service eliminated)
14A 14 Street Crosstown via Avenue A (now the M14A)
14D 14 Street Crosstown via Avenue D (now the M14D)

(Notice the absence from this list of 21 Houston Street-Avenue C [now the M21]; was it out of 12th Street or 54th Street as of '68?)

A few things stick out. Evidently with the demise of the 2 (Fifth-Madison & Lenox Avenues) and startup of 101A (Third-Lexington & Lenox Avenues) on March 2, 1969, a shuffle of certain routes occurred:

20 (now M116) - 100 Street Depot (1968) > 146 Street Depot (1969)
TB (now M35) - 100 Street Depot (1968) > 146 Street Depot (1969)

This would pale compared to the various route reassignments that followed in the wake of the closure of 12th Street Depot and the opening of Hudson Pier Depot; would appreciate the initial (early '70's) roster for that depot, if practicable, s'il vous plait.

The Bronx Division, meanwhile, had these routes as of November 1967 (some routes with A or B suffices were not included):

Coliseum Depot

3 Prospect Avenue
5/5A Bruckner Boulevard
6 Throgs Neck (now the Bx30)
7 Boston Road (service eliminated)
8 Williamsbridge Road (now the Bx8)
9 Eastchester Road (now the Bx31)
11 170 Street Crosstown
12 Fordham Road/City Island (now the Bx12)
13 Castle Hill (now the Bx22)
14 Edenwald Avenue (now the Bx16)
15 Gun Hill Road (now the Bx28)
16 Webster Avenue
17 Allerton Avenue (now the Bx26)
18 Macombs Road
22 Country Club (later the Bx14; since eliminated)
23 Crosby-Layton Avenues (now the Bx8)
36 180 Street Crosstown
49 Highbridge (service eliminated)

West Farms Depot

21 Pelham Bay Park (service eliminated)
25 Morris Avenue (now the Bx32)
26 Boston Road & Morris Park Avenue (now the Bx21)
27 Clasons Point
28 Williamsbridge (now the Bx39)
29 Willis Avenue (now the Bx15)
31 Southern Boulevard (now the Bx19)
32 St. Ann's Avenue (service eliminated)
33 138 Street Crosstown
40 Tremont Avenue
42 Westchester Avenue (now the Bx4)

Kingsbridge Depot

1 Concourse-138 Street
2 Concourse Hub
4 Jerome-Bainbridge Avenues (now the Bx34)
10 Riverdale Avenue (now the Bx7)
19 207 Street Crosstown (now the Bx12)
20 Bronx Park-Van Cortlandt Park (now the Bx9)
24 Bailey Avenue (service eliminated)
34 163 Street Crosstown (now the Bx6)
35 167 Street Crosstown
37 Ogden Avenue (now the Bx13)
38 University Avenue (now the Bx3)
41 Webster Avenue-White Plains Road

Looks like in the interim between 1967 and 1970-72, Coliseum gained Bx40 (amongst existing routes) and lost Bx6, Bx11 and Bx36. (Bx30 was assigned out of Amsterdam Depot, covering the Manhattan Division.)
