When the TA and MaBSTOA began assigning borough prefices to all bus routes in 1972, the Elmhurst Crosstown, heretofore #16, became QM16. This, despite it not traveling through Manhattan, because: a) it was a MaBSTOA route, and b) it was based out of 54th Street depot in Manhattan, as was (QM)15 (later M32, now Q32). The QM16 moniker was duplicative of Green Bus lines' Rockaway-to-Manhattan express (just as QM15 had been to GBL's Lindenwood-to-Manhattan express), thus the Elmhurst crosstown QM16 becoming Q89 in 1974. |
