Re: ''You Can't Sit Down'': CTA

On the Brown, Red, and Blue lines there are eight car trainsets that are only used for weekday rush hour. Theoretically, the no seat cars would be entrained in these consists as "belly cars." This is what is done with cars that have BO cab signals.

But if the seats are removed permanently, those cars would always be out of service in off-peak hours, greatly reducing the number spares available for service during those times. Unless they plan on using surplus 22/2400s that would otherwise be junked, jump seats are a better idea.

How about this????

If the seats fold like someone here suggested, what's to keep rush hour passengers from sitting in them anyway. Are we going to have PA announcements: "Attention passengers, sitting in the high capacity cars is prohibited. If you are sitting down, you must stand up immediately."

"Smoking, littering, playing of loud musical devices, sitting in the high capacity cars is prohibited."

Are you serious? How much is this going to cost the CTA?

I haven't seen any numbers, but in my opinion it could end up saving the CTA money. Seniors might be enticed to take a free trip on CTA instead of paying for a heavily-subsidized paratransit ride.

You never really explained it. You gave a few reasons why they migh choose trucks over rail such as danger of damage and vandalization, and bein able to reach the destination.

I did explain it. Prove what I didn't explain by going back and quote what I wrote.

...and i wonder how freight railroads stay in buisiness, and make profit.

One way is not to wait on once every twenty or thirty years of shipping transit cars for mid life rehab. Coal and intermodal and bulk commodities keep railroads in business. Learn to spell "business" while you're at it.

If the cars are crush loaded, other passengers can enforce the rule - similar to what regular commuters have to do to get Cubs fans who insist on standing in the doorways at rush hour to move into the car. If that doesn't work, there are locking mechanisms that would do the trick.

They don't need all the cars off-peak and weekends. If they are willing to do some switching in the yards, then they can take off the seatless cars for those time periods, and replace them with seated cars. If they don't want to do switching, then maybe they could leave the seatless cars in the train sets, but run shorter headways to make up for the lost seats.

Thi is exactly what CTA was doing with 2200s on the Blue Line before extra cars were required when Pink Line service started. The only caveat is if there aren't enough spare seated cars to allow seated cars to be rotated in and out of the shop.

Five JR lines around Tokyo have either one or two of these in their consists.

They enter in service with the seats up and locked. Once the morning rush is over, there will be an announcement that the seats will be unlocked. Once someone flip the seat down, they become locked again and stay in the down position for the rest of the day.

Also these cars have six sets of doors per side.

Which system would that be?

The one that wasn't around when NYCT's predecessors were already serving people for decades?

The one that regularly doesn't run full-length trains?

The one that doesn't have an unlimited ride fare option?

The one that doesn't operate 24/7?

WMATA has good points and bad points just like every other system. So there are a few questions to remind you of a few of WMATA's shortcomings.
