I fail to see what this has to do with anything. I previously stated that I have no problem with the proposed plan, but it would be better for the cars to have flip-up seating for greater flexibility during off-peak hours and weekends. and I don't think it would be permanent. By "permanent" I meant that the seats couldn't be quickly put back in at, say, the end of rush hour when crowding isn't an issue. |

The whole idea behind this idea being floated is to gauge public support. They are doing it with an eye toward actually changing the seating arrangement, likely to a longitudinal seating arrangement. This is distinctly different from WMATA's approach because WMATA can add cars and expand to 8 car trains, a consequence of their newer system, so it is not absolutely neccesary for them to change anything within the cars. Chicago does not have that luxury and has crowding problems which are as bad, if not worse, than Metro. Thus the CTA can threaten to put two cars without seats in each train and then compromise to adopt a longitudinal seating arrangement which provides a balance between seating and standee space. |

But for an item under "review", this sure got a lot of hits. But on your subject, all the 6000s had cabs that dressed down to allow for public seating and use. The 1-50s didn't. The Pullman 2000s also allowed for passenger use of the cab, but operating procedures usually kept the cab in the last car locked, With the 2400 series cars in the late 70s, the dedicated motorman cabs came to the CTA. As to standing, CTA rules are more stringent, motormen were required to stand through interlockings, on curves, through work zones. Many motormen stood the entire route, sort of leaned against the window and car body. David Harrison |

WMATA doesn't have the cars to run more 8 car trains. You did not respond correctly. You added more forbidden language...."waste." The last exchanges we had you finally admitted you were wrong in saying what you said and retracted the statements. I then posted the explanation of the CTA rehab. You never responded. I don't have time to babysit you. You can go back and find tha response. I will not repeat it because you have failed to comply with this latest exchange. Until you comply...NOTHING. Call it mean if yo want to. |

You never really explained it. You gave a few reasons why they migh choose trucks over rail such as danger of damage and vandalization, and bein able to reach the destination....and i wonder how freight railroads stay in buisiness, and make profit. |

Simply stated, the free rides are subtracted from the state money supplied. The transit agencies pay for it. If the agencies didn't pay, the state money would not have been coming. Ransom in a word. But its a whole separate subject, especially when you add in what will in happen next year's budget.David Harrison |

Today it seems that transit agencies couldn't care less about comfort. On the contrary, ridership levels have been low in the past few decades, so modern rapid transit cars (outside of New York) favor comfort over capacity - they have less standing room and fewer doors to accommodate more seats. Now that ridership is exploding, 2x2 transverse seating is proving to be a major problem. |
