The T and w are not totally unused, and the x was used as part of the route name for the NX in 1967. Y is the only one left over and AFAIK was intended for use on the branch of the SAS that would have connected to the Dyre Av Line after it was transferred over from the IRT.

I like those travel guides. It's interesting seeing routes described in narrative form rather than grid form. That way everything you have to say about a route's peculiarities you can just say without worrying about where to fit it.

Also, the rule at Stl QJ was that if QB were to go BO on the stand, a QJ was to be converted to QB service, but QBs were not to be abandoned. In the event that such an occurrence took place, the road C/R and Plat C/Rs might not have had enough time the scroll through al the signs to get to the proper reading before departure time.

Once again friends in Rego Park had to add 20 minutes to their commute to NYC today because of the GO's on Queens Corridor.

It's rough.

There was a ton of congestion going Manhattan-bound with three services on the express and yellow flags parallel to the work gangs.

I think what may be causing some confusion is that during the time the N ran on Queens Boulevard, and especially on the 1976-78 maps, it was still officially described as the "Broadway Express".

But in fact, it ran local in both directions on Broadway during rush hours, so the only Broadway peak-hour express service was the QB, which (people tell me) only had a few runs.

During the time the N ran on Queens Boulevard, it had at least 4 service patterns:

1) Weekends and evenings: Coney island to 57th Street, express on Broadway

2) Rush Hours: Coney Island to 71/Continental, local on Broadway

3) Rush hours: Whitehall St to 71/Continental (basically, the old EE), local on Broadway.

(patterns 2 & 3 ran at the same time. I knew people who were confused and got on the wrong train...)

4) Mid-day Weekdays: Coney Island to 71/Continental, express on Broadway. During Christmas break in the 5th grade, I got to ride this with my dad- I was thrilled!!

But at no time, was there scheduled express N service on Queens Boulevard.

Since pattern 3 was identical to what had been the EE, it would have made sense to keep using that designation. But perhaps the cars used for the N service didn't have signs for EE?

Yes, you have it correct, especially if one looks at it from the prospective of the usual riders of the N-train, and the usual riders of the old EE. The TA was trying to give each group what it usually had.

The old EE riders were expecting a local train in the mornings on Queens Blvd to take them to the local stations along the Broadway line, and then in the pm rush hours, again a local service to take them home along Queens Blvd. Thus am rush hour N-trains leaving Queens Blvd was local downtown in Manhattan on Broadway, and in addition some N-trains went to Whitehall Street.

The usual N-train riders from Brooklyn were expecting an express train along Fourth Avenue and along Broadway in the am rush hours. Which is what they got in those days, the uptown N-trains were running express along the Fourth Avenue line in Brooklyn, and EXPRESS along Broadway in the am rush hours.

The usual N-train riders in the pm rush hours were expecting an express train along Fourth Avenue and along Broadway for their trips home to Brooklyn. What they got was the usual pm rush hours N-trains running express. The N-train running to Queens Blvd lasted for about 10 years or so.

From the usual prospective of an "express service" on a four track line - one expects the "express" service to use both express tracks in both directions. One could simply think of it as an local/express set of service on a three-track line. In addition there were a few of the QB usual Broadway-express / Brighton local trains rush hours only trains. While the train maps of those days strongly suggested that these QB trains operated in one direction only, the actual practice was a bit different than what the maps described. It's these kinds of actual practices that add to the mysteries of the subways to unfold.

In any case, all of this becomes moot, during the Manhattan Bridge repairs and both N-trains and R-trains in addition to switching terminals become fully local in Manhattan for almost 18-20 years or so. Thus the pattern of Astoria and Queens Blvd local trains traveling local in Manhattan has remained in place for several decades - regardless of the train letters used for the practice.

Mike

Actually, when delivered, the R-40Ms and the R-42s in the group dedicated for the N had signs for both the EE and GG.

So very interesting. Brooklyn riders were looking for "express all the way" and Queens was looking for "local all the way" and this was how they made it happen.

In what world does it make MORE sense to hit post 12 times rather than just wait it out to confirm that your post went through?

If telling yourself that makes you feel better, then great. But the truth is that I am right and you are wrong. As usual.

Because the system was so screwed up it was extremely difficult to just "wait it out"? It was many hours, if not a whole day before the system was back to normal. And since he's probably not a techie, he might not have realized that a) all his posts went through despite the errors, b) that there were tiny windows where he could get the index, if he kept clicking reload enough times and waiting each time until it worked.

The R44/46 had EE signs.
Had the link survived the route change,it would have been using those cars, instead of the extended N line.
