The Broadway el was opened from Gates Ave/B'way to Driggs Ave/B'way on June 25th, 1888. The line was extended to Broadway Ferry (with its unconnected and unused lower level), on Sept 14th, 1889. The unused lower level had to have been built for another possible route along Broadway. But, the Old Main Line turned off at B'way/Lex, the Brooklyn & Rockaway Beach (Canarsie) was still separate, as was the Kings County Elevated. That is why I said, "... for a possible connection with the LIRR".

To me, that lower level appears to be an extension of the walkway. I don't see a pair of longitudinal beams that would hold up a set of tracks. It looks like only one beam is there.

Gates Ave is the oldest rebuilt station in the system. It was the first eastern terminal for the Old Main Line, until it was expanded to Schenck Ave. The station was renamed Van Siclen Ave,after the line was farther routed to Cypress Hills.
After the Broadway el opened from Broadway Ferry, Gates Ave served as a shorturn for some of those B'way trains. Ironically, Gates Ave was the original planned route for the Old Main Line, instead of Lexington Ave.

Same here, and I'm still not that far from it, but seldom go down to Bway or Kent anymore.

Some friends were sharing photos on FB today of their time living in the lofts on Bway in the 80's, and I was thinking of showing them the Bway Ferry spur photo to really blow their minds. The trolley tracks, especially the layover track next to the curb, were still showing through the pavement on Bway back then and there was a stump of elevated attached to one of the buildings around Roebling/Lee, and of course the rings of rusted stumps where the overhead line poles were cut flush to the slate sidewalks. All gone now.

Are you sure that it isn't from, "BROOKLYN, The way It Was", by Brian Merlis? Page 233 has a photo captioned, "Bedford Avenue, looking south toward South 6th Street and Broadway, 1921". It shows 2 Broadway-Brooklyn gate trains, one on each track, on the Ferry Spur. It was taken from under the WillyB, it shows an autmobile in front of the Kings County Savings bank.

Was your photo, if it's a different one, dated? I'd guess that it's from the mid-1920's. (Merlis' book shows a train of gate cars on each track.) As fewer el cars were needed on the rush hour Broadway-Brooklyn line, the eastbound track (would be southbound in your photo) was taken out of service. As I said earlier, the arrival of more Triplexes freed up more Standards for the Eastern Division. As the surplus of gate cars increased, the BMT decided to begin scrapping its older cars. Beginning in 1926, the "800" series el cars were scrapped. Almost all were gone by 1930.

I am sure there were plenty of photos taken during that era of the area.

I found some photos of the birneys used by the Dept of Bridges and Structures for taking over BRT trolley service over the Wburg bridge that were shot around the same time. Cars were delivered on horsedrawn carts!!! In the snow!

Facing south from the WillyB, that would be the westbound (towards B'way Ferry) traack. I don't know if the eastbound track was still there, in 1924. Probably was, if they relayed back to Marcy Ave on the eastbound track, after using the X-tracks just east of B'way Ferry.

I've looked at that site. it's great!! But I think they made one mistake- the second picture, showing what they claimed is the passenger area after demolition, is incorrect.

Look at the angled footbridge- it goes northeasterly over 10th Avenue, just as they say. But the passenger station was actually between 10th and 9th- not 11th and 10th. That footbridge enabled a safe crossing of 10th Avenue ("Death Avenue"), which then had tracks on street level.

If you look at the NYC DOIT 1924 aerial photo, center it on the intersection of 9th Avenue and West 30th Street, you'll see the passenger station, and the footbridge- AND the transfer facility to the 9th Avenue El.

So- what they claim is the demolished passenger station was actually a freight yard, also clearly visible on the DOIT view to the northwest.

But they would appear to be right that the service lasted into the post WW1 period...

NO! The Broadway-Brooklyn el cars ran in rush hours only to/from Canal Street. After July 3rd, 1916 closing of the ferry spur, the tracks were used to store B'way-B'klyn gate cars, when not in service. the gate cars ran to Canal St until 1927.

Main: Thank you for your kind words and don't ever hesitate to ask a valid question. You raised a good point and cited a valid source. In this case we are dealing with something that happened long before either of us was born so we have to rely on the published accounts of others. I looked at the map in question as I have a copy of it . It does indeed show the spur to the Broadway Ferry . The Broadway Ferry station is shown but without any name and the Driggs Avenue station is not shown at all. Interestingly
the 1939 BMT map shows the same information. In fact its virtually unchanged from the 1924 map.

I consulted a 1968 article "BRT-BMT Eastern Division Abandoned Trackage" by Mr David Rogoff and he confirms the July 2, 1916 termination date.

I also consulted "Over and Back, The History of Ferryboats in New York Harbor" by Mr Brian Cudahy. He informs us that although the Williamsburg Ferry Company went out of business in 1908, a new organization known as the Brooklyn and Manhattan Ferry Company resumed operation on the East 23 Street and Roosevelt Street routes in 1911. This lasted until 1918. New York City resumed operation on the Broadway - Grand Street Ferry from 1921 to 1931. These later day ferry routes catered more to the horse drawn freight trade and waterfront businesses. The BMT was still a for profit company and may have continued to show the route in case the ferry trade would prove to be a source of income at some future date. (That's only speculation on my part.)

Please let me know if you uncover any more information about this.

Larry, RedbirdR33

Myrtle retained that for quite a while, and as I mentioned in other posts, the short section of the Fulton St El at Fkln, had them as late as circa 1960 when I rode it for the first time. When I went back a year or two later, the rails ant ties were gone and only the open structure remained.

not exactly..

as far as i can remember[rode the Eastern lines almost all my life]..there were never any tracks on the Ferry spur from the 60's forward...as the structure ended a short distance away from the control tower.

yes..you are correct about the Myrtle El..
the tracks were left there until the 90's..crumbling away with crap falling into the streets.

I remember that. A buddy of mine had a spike fall on his van just north of Myrtle/Bway by Bushwick Ave. around that time frame, nice dent in the roof. He wanted to keep it so when he sued, he'd have evidence. I just wanted another piece of the Myrtle el!

My recollection goes back to the early 1980's and I remember no tracks there.

1967 for me at that spot, Bressner's was on Marcy and just the stub, some wood on it, no rails.

i can believe you..
Whenever I walked along that particular strech..i always tried to stay closer to the buildings..as i personally watched someone get rained on by debris, mostly chipped broken pieces of old wooden ties.

When the Jamaica Line carried route #15, in the early 1960's, I remember seeing piles of ties and rails. I didn't know if they were in storage there or were souvenirs of the spur, which came down in May, 1941.

That also happened on the Pitkin Ave section of the Fulton St el. The western portion of Pitkin el was up for about 3 years after its April, 1956 closure.

Reread page 179 of "Over & Back". It said that service, begun in 1908, only lasted a few years. All ferry service- and service on the Broadway Ferry Spur- ended on July 3rd, 1916. In 1921, there was talk of bringing back ferry service between East 23rd Street and Grand Street, under municipal ownership. That never materialized!

There is no mention on page 179 of ferry service ending on July 3, 1916. The Brooklyn and Manhattan Ferry Company resumed operations on two of the routes on March 16, 1911 and continued to operate these route until 1918.

Now go to page 240. You will see that in 1923 the Board of Estimate approved the purchase of eight 151 foot ferryboats to be assigned to lines on the East River and the Broadway-Grand Street Ferry is listed among them.

Now go to Appendix B on page 364 and you will see that the Broadway - Grand Street Ferry was operated by the Williamsburg Ferry Company from 1851 to 1909 and then by New York City from 1921 to 1931.

That's what I remember, wooden slats surrounding the tower building.

Correct. Absolutely no tracks.....just wooden walkway slats. And that was late 70s.
