Was your photo, if it's a different one, dated? I'd guess that it's from the mid-1920's. (Merlis' book shows a train of gate cars on each track.) As fewer el cars were needed on the rush hour Broadway-Brooklyn line, the eastbound track (would be southbound in your photo) was taken out of service. As I said earlier, the arrival of more Triplexes freed up more Standards for the Eastern Division. As the surplus of gate cars increased, the BMT decided to begin scrapping its older cars. Beginning in 1926, the "800" series el cars were scrapped. Almost all were gone by 1930.
