I'mma Queens native myself, and yes I definitely am looking into private schools for my daughters. Though the area of Queens I am looking into, Bellerose/Queens Village area, School District 26 is reportedly the best school district in Queens, and one of the best in the city, so that definitely looks and sounds very good as far as thinking of the public school approach. And as far as the commute, I might balk at the LIRR as well, and consider driving, either to 125th Street to park, or to Vernon-Jackson and then hop the #7 in to GCT. Being near the Cross Island Parkway also keeps Stamford on my list of crew bases to work, it will add maybe 10 to 12 minutes to my current time to get to Stamford from Parkchester. North White Plains would be pushing it, and Harmon is definitely out of the question. |

Don't discount District 28 either (Forest Hills/Rego Park) They have great schools. For Elementary PS 139 is great and not just cause I went there, for Jr HS you have JHS 190/Sage which again is good and then Forest Hills HS (did not go there) which I hear is good.Don't totally rule out Harmon, my uncle lives in Valley Stream and commutes daily to Peekskill and says it isn't that bad |

I'mma Queens native myself, and yes I definitely am looking into private schools for my daughters.Wait, you already have kids? Either you had kids at an early age or you're older than you let on. The old district 26 zone was one of the best in Queens, but IIRC, didn't it cover Queens north of the Grand Central Parkway? Mind you, Queens Village and Bellrose are rather nice communities in Queens as they're relatively safe and the bus service is tolerable in certain areas. Being near the Cross Island Parkway also keeps Stamford on my list of crew bases to work, it will add maybe 10 to 12 minutes to my current time to get to Stamford from Parkchester. My dad used to commute across the Throgs Neck for about 12 years, so while traffic can have its bad days, it's certainly not too bad. Theoretically, you can report not just to Stamford, but North White Plains isn't that far, and if Highbridge is a reporting site, it isn't too bad either. My dad used to work in that area, and he'd have 35 minute commutes from Cambria Heights on good days... |

Paul, allow me to chime in as someone who does not particularly care for Brian's web persona, doesn't take too many of his own photographs as he recognizes his relative inability, and who knows what he likes and doesn't like in photographs when he sees them, regardless of who took them. First of all, your photos, while overall good quality, are highly repetitious. The train is 1/4 mile away, it's nosing into the station, it's stopped at the station, and then we see the red taillights. Four photos of the same damned train. With cutie-pie commentary a-la Bob ("Let's paint a happy little tree; he lives right here") Ross, may he rest in peace. With all due respect, I'd just as soon skip that. Second, there's too much train most of the time and not enough surroundings. Again, that's just me. But if you took your inside access to your advantage, you'd show as much of the backstage surrounding the trains as possible for us civilians to marvel at. Then again, since shop areas change less overall than the surrounding area, we can soon grow tired of those shots as well. The trains, once again, for the thousandth time, are all the same, unless you show one with its bonnet bashed in, one with two windows that aren't OEM, or some other small but significant distinguishing characteristic. It's the same damned photo, over and over again. Trains wouldn't be around if not for people (or coal, or corn syrup). The trains are part of our region's sociology. Capturing that essence is the acme of artistry. Once again, while the trains on the outside are all the same, the INSIDES are truly unique and ever-changing. Who wouldn't want to capture some of this? This isn't a technical website, and I am sure that we can guess at the shape of the rest of the train underneath a model's tits lying on it. We're men, for crying out loud. Hopefully healthy, sexually driven men. Trains and girls can be like chocolate and peanut butter. Yes, each independently is quite good, but the two of them together can only be better, even if you don't ALWAYS like them so. I'm sure that even our homosexual faction can understand and appreciate this fact in context. Anyway, your railing against people in shots is highly indicative of some underlying problem preventing you from seeing more than just the merest sliver of the hobby in a vacuum without appreciating the bigger picture. While I think it is sad, who am I to judge what everybody's comfort level with anything should be? |

Ahh yes - I agree O Winston Link was the greatest rail photographer. However, Fred does come very close considering the equipment we as hobbyists have at our disposal.Lets not forget that Mr Link spent hours setting up the shots, including multiple flash units (42 of them for one picture, possibly even more for others). MTA police would really let us get away with that - they barely tolerate a hand-held camera :) I'm sure the MTA may allow a staged shot but at a fee that would price it beyond the ability of anyone who posts here. |

Winston Link-style nighttime commuter rail shot would be perfectly legal since you would probably be setting up off of MTA property. The only consideration might be permission from the municipality. An el shot could be done from an apartment or rooftop without any question of legality, because you wouldn't be under any jurisdiction at all. I don't suggest trying these simply because you would blind the crew, but it seems technically legal. |

O. Winston Link did not take pictures of underage children in his posts!! And again, this man's reputation in the railroad photography hobby is known the world over, and many publications and books can attest to that!!To even compare any disgraceful garbage, borderline illegal, "photos" that no-talent, pretentious wannabe Brian Whineberg puts forth, to anything O. Winston Link has done which has solidified him as a railroad photography legend, is a total disrespect to the work and memory of that awesome railroad photographer, whose work will be repeated and followed, but definitely not by anything Brian Whineberg comes forth with!! And not for nothing, those women look OVER 18!!!! |

One pic????? Maybe 2, and????And a one piece bikini is considered scantly clad????? :- / (I mean, I do not see a short skirt, a belly showing, or their posteriors!!) And again, those women look well over 18!!! In those days, young children (like Brian had in his pics) were not out at night like they all are now!!! |

To even compare any disgraceful garbage, borderline illegal, "photos"...What law (in the U.S., at least) even comes close to saying you can't take a picture of anyone under 18? The only perversion I see here is the idea that there's something perverted about a photograph of a fully clothed individual in a public place. |

I, and I am quite sure MANY, would see something wrong with multiple photos of underage children, without their or their parent/guardian's permission, being taken by some unknown grown man!!Ask yourself this, would you be okay with an unknown individual taking photos of your little children (if you have any) without your permission, and unknowing what the person could be using for?? I sure would!! And I am quite sure that would get the attention of a cop who observes such!! And again, I did not say ILLEGAL, I said BORDERLINE, means getting there, close, closing in!! And what is so interesting about any person just standing around waiting for a train??? |

The bottom line is that there is NO law against it. Paul and others should read The Photographers Rights flyer published by an attorney.Permissible Subjects Despite misconceptions to the contrary, the following subjects can almost always be photographed lawfully from public places: accident and fire scenes children celebrities bridges and other infrastructure residential and commercial buildings industrial facilities and public utilities transportation facilities (e.g., airports) Superfund sites criminal activities law enforcement officers The only time a photograph of a child may be considered "perverted" is if it were to focus on certain body parts (even if clothed). These pictures do not meet that criteria. |

"almost always"There's plenty of room in that statement that can make for questions and suspicions from law enforcement or even any concerned adult, when a grown man is snapping photos of someone's children without their permission, especially when the uses of such photos are unknown to the guardian/parent of the child/children in subject and question!! Ask yourself, would YOU be okay with a strange, unknown grown male or even a female is taking all kinds of photos of your children without your permission, especially to which the usage of the pictures to this person are unknown?? Having 3 daughters, I would DAMN SURE have a problem with that!!!!! |
