He supplied proof plus it is common knowledge it is an FRA RR operating under only certain waivers from FRA. If the plan is to replace their R44s with the R46s as discussed here the R46s need to be equipped with equipment that will make the FRA complient. This is all easy 4 u 2 look up on the internet but there is enough proof on this board aloneDRN is a good source of info |

The North Shore line has not seen a train for at least 20 years, except for short section between St. George and the new ball park. Most, if all of the track to NJ has been torn out or washed out.All the SIRT R44s no longer have grab irons or steps. |

NYCT has 2 connections to the outside world, and just about every major rapid transit system in the U.S. has a direct rail connection to the outside railroad network, doesn't make them railroads governed by the FRA rules and regulations. Whether or not they have a direct connection I really think does not matter. |

SIRT lost their connection to the outside rail system when the North Shore line (which connected SIRT to the outside world) was abandoned. The only part of the old North Shore line still in use is the short section from the SIRT terminal to the new ball park.Your argument would be sound if SIR were deemed a rapid transit operation. However, per title 45 of the US Code, I believe that there is good reason to think that SIR is commuter rail, and therefore, that it has to comply with all applicable FRA regulations. I am thus inclined to agree with Dutchrailnut. |

And I never knew whether or not a physical connection to the outside rail network was ever relevant, AFAIK it isn't. If it was, than a LOT of rapid transit systems who do have physical connections to the outside rail network directly, including NYCT (NYCH/NYAR at Linden Yard and the SBK at Ninth Avenue) would have to be governed by FRA regulations. |
