Marine Park was mostly farm land and marshes. And I could see the remnants of the old race track that Nostrand Avenue would run through. Plus it was nice to see the city before Robert Moses's highways carving everything up. If Google ever gets this aerial map, I'd love to superimpose my IND Second System Map on it.Thanks for the heads up N6 Limited! |

Brooklynites will enjoy an aerial view of the NY & Manhattan Beach line, especially Manhattam Beach Junction in its last year of passenger operation.Note the tennis courts, the extra tracks for sidings (apparently with some passenger cars lined up). Then follow the line south to its terminal in Manhattan Beach. Great stuff. |

Furthermore, it looks like the LIRR was at grade from Guy R. Brewer Blvd(New York Blvd) to Hollis Ave, and the streets that currently cross under it to the west to just before Sutphin Blvd actually used to cross over it. |

I'll have to explore this in depth later (time for bed), but the last place I lived in Brooklyn was 1 1/2 blocks east of Ebbets Field (when I lived there, the park was gone and the apartment houses were up). So I click on the map, and of course the current views had the apartments, then go to 1924 and a baseball field appeared by magic :) Thing is, most of the houses on that block (Sullivan Pl) were there in 1924! (I think they were built some time in the teens). |

So Flatbush LIRR Terminal was elevated?Broadway and Fulton St lines together, very interesting. What were the service patterns then? I'm sure Broadway express utilized. A few Observations, the only way to Manhattan from Northern Brooklyn and Southern Queens was via the Fulton St and Broadway Lines. It seems as if the Queens Blvd and 14 st lines siphoned their Trunk Status away. Before the Brighton Line extension under Flatbush Ave, full service ran up the current Franklin Shuttle route, and along the Fulton St Elevated? Wow, OT but, Tillary St didn't exist. |

I'm having a blast tracing the EXACT path of the Whitestone Branch, then phasing over to the 2006 view, and seeing the little hints in today's landscape that shows the path of the ROW, such as the size of some houses' backyards, and the curves of warehouses that are still standing today. The very beginning of the Cross Island Parkway just off the Whitestone Expressway follows the ROW. Whitestone Landing, the final stop of the LIRR, and its train yard, are now a large shopping center in Whitestone off 154th Street & 10th Avenue, with a Waldbaum's. It makes sense that today's larger commercial developments were able to use so much land thanks to the abandoned railways. Also, take a look at where the White Plains Road Line and Third Avenue El meet in the Bronx, near today's 3 Avenue - 149 Street Station. Now compare it to today's structure where the (2) and (5) enter the portal. Doesn't it look like the portal was moved, and the (2) and (5) now take the "diverging" tracks that used to connect to the el, except now they go underground after turning southwest? |

Look at what seems to be an old ROW to the right of the Culver El in the middle of the picture. Given that the line was elevated in 1919 (I think) and this is from 1924, it seems likely that it would still be visible. |

Glad to hear everyone's enjoying those 1924 photos. I could look at them for hours! When I started at DoITT back in late 2005, the first project I did was to register those photos (originally from DCP) using ArcMap. Despite some seams and other mismatches, it proved not too difficult to line them up with newer photos. Considering that these were taken when aerial photography was in its infancy, and certainly long before computers and GIS, I was able to get good results. Enjoy!Bob |

Could that have been the McDonald Ave trolley before the road under the El became McDonald Ave? If you follow it straight down to the Brighton Line, it does seem to line up where that line ran before it got to the West 5th St terminal. (The change in the girders can be seen today, in fact).Wow, no Belt Pkwy, no Coney Island Yard and I can see where my grandmother's house was on Brighton 3rd St. --Mark |

You can see through to the tracks on three lots that had not been built upon, the New York Central Building (1929) site straddling Park between 45th and 46th and The Barclay Hotel (1926) site on Lexington between 48th and 49th.
