The East London Line, formerly part of London Underground, will re-open, with its extension from Shoreditch to Dalston Junction, as a part of London Overground, in April. New stations will open at Shoreditch High Street, Hoxton, Haggerston and Dalston Junction. A month, ELL later trains wil astart to run through to former Southern Railway lines to West Croydon and Crystal Palace, sharing these lines with Southern trains.

Glad to hear it. I'm looking forward to riding it when I'm in London in June.

See here for details.

What I would like Fytton to answer is how much of this is new track, and how much is just allowing existing connections, given that the ELL is now probably 3rd rail rather than 4-rail.

'What I would like Fytton to answer is how much of this is new track'

Utterly new RoW runs only from Shoreditch (just on the Whitechapel side of the old station), over a new long skew bridge over the multiple tracks of the approach to Liverpool Street main-line station, then on a new viaduct across the site of the old Bishopsgate goods station (= freight yard, in American!) - Shoreditch High Street new station is on this viaduct - continuing with an attractive bowstring bridge over Shoreditch High Street itself, then a curving viaduct round to join on to the butt end of the old North London Line viaduct north of the site of that line's Broad Street terminus.

The line then follows the old NLL RoW to Dalston Junction, which had bee trackless since the closure of the Broad Street line when the NLL trains from Richmond were diverted to their present route through Hackney to Stratford after a brief interval of running into Liverpool Street terminus. The line on from Dalston Junction station to the junction itself, allowing through running to Highbury & Islington over the NLL tracks, is being relaid now and will open to passengers in 2011. Unfortunately Dalston still gets two separate stations, as Dalston Kingsland station is on the Hackney line from the junction. At New Cross Gate station, the link from the NLL platforms to the Brighton main line, missing for many years, is going back in, to allow the through running to West Croydon and Crystal Palace which starts a little later in 2010.

The future extension over the South London Line to Clapham Junction will entail relying track along another section of old RoW long without track, inclusive of a new station at Surrey Canal Road. Hopefully, before too many decades pass, they will restore a station at Brixton on the SLL - East Brixton station closed years ago - to provide connections to the southern terminus of the Victoria Line.

Thanks for that. I’m always amused about just how much old RoW is being pressed back into service again.

'Now if they could go ahead with one of the plans and re-open Primrose Hill...'

We don't really know yet what the long-term plans for services over the London Overground network might be. The line through Primrose Hill was used not long ago when the DC Lines into Euston were closed for engineering work, and a Watford Junction-Stratford service via Primrose Hill ran as a replacement, though not stopping at the derelict station there - which has since been demolished. In my opinion, the best thing would be to make that the regular service, but open a new station at a slightly different location to facilitate interchange with Chalk Farm (Northern Line) station, for the benefit of passengers trying to reach Euston.

Let us British SubChatters (me or Kew Gardens) know when you're coming, and we can try to meet up for a day's London railfanning!

the butt end of the old North London Line viaduct north of the site of that line's Broad Street terminus.

Broad Street terminus was an impressive structure. When I first saw it (in the 1950s) I was impressed by how few passengers used it, even in the peak hours, in contrast to the bustling Liverpool Street station next door. By that time there were shorter routes to most places served by Broad Street.

According to the Wikipedia article on Broad Street station, "With nine platforms at its peak, it became the third busiest London station (after Liverpool Street, immediately adjacent, and Victoria)." The approach viaduct had four tracks.

I too remember Broad Street and its limited usage. Before the advent of the deep tube Underground lines in the 1900s, many of the suburban railways provided two lots of commuter trains, one to The West End and the other to The City, as surface transport between these two CBDs was so slow. The North London Railway provided routes to The City for those companies without their own City terminus, but these were rather circuitous. It lost a lot of its raison d'etre when the deep tubes opened. Its own main route from Richmond survived to be electrified, though, and there were also peak-hour electric services from Watford Junction via Primrose Hill. By the end, those two were all that were left at Broad Street, and since it occupied a very large site in a location with high land values, British Rail decided it was dispensible!

There was also a great sandwich shop on the corner: Kossof’s. They would make meal-in-a-sandwich-sized sandwiches on half a loaf of French bread. I think the bakery was somewhere on Petticoat Lane.

I used to walk from Goodmans Fields a couple of times a week in the summer to get lunch there.

Very true. Also I cannot imagine why anyone would ever have wanted to go from Broad Street to Poplar, which was even more circuitous. But according to Subterranea Britannica a Mr. Henry Hart had a season ticket on that route in 1867!
