'Broad Street terminus was an impressive structure. When I first saw it (in the 1950s) I was impressed by how few passengers used it, even in the peak hours'

I too remember Broad Street and its limited usage. Before the advent of the deep tube Underground lines in the 1900s, many of the suburban railways provided two lots of commuter trains, one to The West End and the other to The City, as surface transport between these two CBDs was so slow. The North London Railway provided routes to The City for those companies without their own City terminus, but these were rather circuitous. It lost a lot of its raison d'etre when the deep tubes opened. Its own main route from Richmond survived to be electrified, though, and there were also peak-hour electric services from Watford Junction via Primrose Hill. By the end, those two were all that were left at Broad Street, and since it occupied a very large site in a location with high land values, British Rail decided it was dispensible!
