The R-44 speed record

The R44 also set the world speed record for a subway car. On January 31, 1972, a consist reached a speed of 87.75 mph(141.2 km/hr) on the Long Island Rail Road's main line between Woodside and Jamaica. With two motors per car disabled, the train still reached 77 mph. The cars were capable of even higher speeds, but the length of the test track was insufficient to allow further acceleration.

The question: has this record ever been broken?

By an R-44? No! And from what I've read, I doubt that the test could be called a success. Several of the traction motors reportedly "bird-caged" during the run.

The R44 westinghouse-P wire (orginal-100-399) was one (1) of the BEST cars I've ever operated. I don't recall this ever being broken by a NYCT subway car.

The R38 (orginal-3950-4149)was first.

Was it true that that train was still accelerating when it hit 87.75?

Just think - another quarter-mile per hour and the flux capacitor would have been activated resulting in a temporal displacement.:)

If that happened, he would be runing next to a penn station to Ozone Park local.. I think the 44's would beat the MP's. (I Think that was the end of the rockaway line in Sept 1955).

This test was well documented, and it did achieve 87.75 MPH without any reported problems, and then they cut out some motors to simulate a heavy ridership load and the train still reached 77 MPH. The R-44 holds the record and no model of equipment in NYCT has surpassed it since. In every reference to this test, no mention was ever made as far as I have seen, about anything out of the ordinary.

I don't know about Guinness, but I did a search titled "World Speed records For Subway Cars", and sure enough all you see is R-44!!!! Google it!!

I can tell you, I enjoyed working on the R-44s, while many others didn't, and the best reason for me was because they were mainstays, especially during my NYCT tenure, of the A Line!! My A#1 Favorite all time run!! :-)

The burned out motors I think was more of a function of 650v verses 600, not going 87MPH. The same thing happened to an identical test of PA1's in 1965, which were made to go fast. I think the R32's had similar difficulties on their New York Central press run into GCT in 1964.

Originally though, the R-44 assignments were equally divided among the A, D, E, and F lines. As late as 1976 when I was the T/D at Church Av there were still a number of R-44s on the F and after the EE was eliminated and replaced by the N in Queens in 1976, a few R-44s even showed up on the N.

The problem with the steels was not their motors but the fact that unlike most conventional 2 motor cars that have 2 motors on one truck and a trailer truck, the steels had maximum traction trucks with only one motor per truck and no trailer truck. This was done to spread out the weight for, operation on some of the older el structures that the steels would operate on. The problem was that since the axle loading was light the cars didn't have the pulling power of other cars. It is also the reason that only one BX (3 car MTM) unit could be used per train and single BX units were not to be operated. BXs were also banned from the Manny B although some old timers claim that an occasional one slipped through. That is also the reason why the Qs were so slow in late years. The received the maximum traction trucks removed from the IRT composites when they were transferred to the 3 Av El and retained those rucks when they were assigned to Myrtle in 1958. Composite trains were all motors so maximum traction trucks were OK in that case but wit 2 trailers per 6 car train of Qs their performance was less than desirable.

I'm absolutely sure because this was before the R-46s were delivered. In fact a D train composed of R-44s derailed in the vicinity of Kings Hwy on the Brighton line in the early 1970s and there was a photo of it in the Daily News. Also when I lived in uptown Manhattan and was a T/D I had occasion to ride an R-44 on the D and as I mentioned before it was before the R-46s were delivered since the R-46s didn't come in till after I moved to Brooklyn in 1974.

Unless there was another R-44 derailment at Kings Highway, I believe the date of the incident in question was January 16, 1981. That was the death knell for 75-foot equipment on the Brighton Line until the R-68s started entering service in 1986 (people along the line had beeon complaining for years that vibrations from the cars were causing damage to their retaining walls -- I don't know if it was ever proved).
