The problem with the steels was not their motors but the fact that unlike most conventional 2 motor cars that have 2 motors on one truck and a trailer truck, the steels had maximum traction trucks with only one motor per truck and no trailer truck. This was done to spread out the weight for, operation on some of the older el structures that the steels would operate on. The problem was that since the axle loading was light the cars didn't have the pulling power of other cars. It is also the reason that only one BX (3 car MTM) unit could be used per train and single BX units were not to be operated. BXs were also banned from the Manny B although some old timers claim that an occasional one slipped through. That is also the reason why the Qs were so slow in late years. The received the maximum traction trucks removed from the IRT composites when they were transferred to the 3 Av El and retained those rucks when they were assigned to Myrtle in 1958. Composite trains were all motors so maximum traction trucks were OK in that case but wit 2 trailers per 6 car train of Qs their performance was less than desirable.
