My feeling on this that I would probably miss the R-32's (but as not much for the R-42's) as the last vintage fleet for me personally when they are all removed from the IND Division next year. One reason because it would be one of the last surviving car types that has a front RFW to look out from plus a geninue bottom side roll sign with the letter code and route displayed (i.e. "(C) 8 Avenue/Fulton").This fact I pointed out to a former high school classmate this past March 2009, when we rode together on the R-32's and slanted R-40's, along with the R-44's running, that were operating on the IND "A" line into Washington Heights that day. Oh well, I better get more of those "joyrides" ASAP on the R-32's, especially on the "C", if you know what I mean... -William A. Padron ["(A) Wash Hts/8 Av/Fulton"] |

I don't even consider the R46s worthy of preservation beyond their operating lives (my opinion). I don't mean to say they should be reefed imminently, but when their time IS up, I won't miss 'em. Not a bit.Somehow, the vision of a preserved R-46 with a trolley pole mounted on the roof is a bit much. Bill Newkirk |

The new tech cars are here to stay, whether you like them or not.The MTA accepted this new technology and if they fail, we have a big problem. Most likely they will succeed like all new technology usually does. The only other alternative would have been to accept a low style, low option car, no computers, etc. You know, like the old days. So,that's it. |

I think that some of the curves on this line are also too sharp for 75' cars. I doubt that the TA ever considered testing the clearances on this line since until recent years the traffic on this line did not show any need for cars longer than 60'. That is why the R143's were ordered (although some R160's also run on this line). |

But they have to get to ENY to access the L line right? It's immaterial anyway as only R143 and R160's are allowed to run there consisting of 480' trains to fit in the stations. |

No, north of Broad St. and beyond due to new clearance profiles necessitated by the re-allignment and new signals and associated hardware installed in recent years. |

If I recall, one clearance problem is that the curve entering Marcy Av is too sharp for 2 trains of 75 ft cars to pass each other at that point. The other one has to do with the curves in ENY Yd which cannot accept a 75 ft car. |

I wonder if the compact fluorescent "bulbs" that exist today had existed back in the earlier years, would the TA have merely installed them in the existing light sockets rather than go to the expense of installing entirely new fixtures. |

A TSS once told me that there were additional fears of no clearance areas on end excess' when new signals, relay boxes and the like were put in when the n/b J/M/Z was re-alligned. They had no intentions of testing it out with a 75' car. |

Probably because by the time the new signals were installed and the tracks realigned, the TA felt it would be unnecessary to make allowances for 75 ft cars that would not be used there anyhow. I also recall seeing an interview with Gene Sansone of NYCT New Car Engineering, I think on Transit Transit, when the R-143s were being ordered in which he said that the MTA was returning to 60 ft cars because passengers like to be able to walk from car to car which cannot be done on 75 ft cars. Apparently at that time, the MTA had abandoned plans to order any more 75 ft equipment. The reason for the scuttlebutt about the R-179s (or whatever number) being 75 ft is that with the new NYCT regulations prohibiting passage between cars, there is no longer a need to have cars with unlocked end doors. It seems almost the height of idiocy for the MTA to design rolling stock specifically to make it easier for passengers to pass between cars and then pass a regulation prohibiting the very act that the cars were designed to facilitate. |
