Probably because by the time the new signals were installed and the tracks realigned, the TA felt it would be unnecessary to make allowances for 75 ft cars that would not be used there anyhow. I also recall seeing an interview with Gene Sansone of NYCT New Car Engineering, I think on Transit Transit, when the R-143s were being ordered in which he said that the MTA was returning to 60 ft cars because passengers like to be able to walk from car to car which cannot be done on 75 ft cars. Apparently at that time, the MTA had abandoned plans to order any more 75 ft equipment. The reason for the scuttlebutt about the R-179s (or whatever number) being 75 ft is that with the new NYCT regulations prohibiting passage between cars, there is no longer a need to have cars with unlocked end doors. It seems almost the height of idiocy for the MTA to design rolling stock specifically to make it easier for passengers to pass between cars and then pass a regulation prohibiting the very act that the cars were designed to facilitate.
