Swan Song For the R40m's...

Greetings Everyone!!! It appears that the end has come for most if not all of the remaining R40m's in passenger service.A look at the "V Line Car Service" Sheet for today revealed the following items of interest:Car#s4484-85 were B.A.S.(Barn After Service)and were to "Be Mothballed" according to the Notes. The same applies to#s4540-41 and the "R-41" Mismates#s4460 and 4465.So,without any fanfare, and largely unnoticed by most "Fans" another car class is lost and will very soon be history.R40m's#s4518-19 and 4506-07 are in "Non Revenue" service on the "#6-Pickup" and may end up being the very last cars of this class to operate. So car historians,if you are reading this,NOW is the time to preserve the 4460-4665 pair before they are stripped for reefing. We may have lost another R-42 pair as well,as a train of R-42s went out of service at Steinway Street this afternoon with "Smoke Issuing".The RCI inspected #4578 and found the insulation melting off the #1 Traction Motor at 2nd Avenue, and this train ran "Light" back to Jamaica Yard,so it is doubtful if this car will be repaired.Farewell to the R40m's-You will be sorely missed in this "Look Alike" R-160 world...

Thanks for the news, albeit bad news. I'll miss operating them. But I said the same thing about the R38's and slants too. R.I.P.

I don't want to hear anybody complaining about not having enough time to get final pics of R40M's because you've been warned and had many chances over the course of the last several weeks.

Dunno what happened to them after GOH, but in their original condition, the 40's were quite peppy and had nice brakes. Pity they were all over in Queens in my time. Only got to play with them when qualifying but I really liked what I had in my hands, however briefly ...

Yeah, only because they are still at ENY yard. If ENY yard got or gets the extra 4-car sets sooner then they can finally retire/displace those R42's. I'm still hoping the R32's final run is on the A [preferably the A] or C.

To all you sub chatters: the R-38s through R-42s and also the R-62s and 68s were never SMEES. By the time those cars were ordered, the WABCO schedule for the current brake system was RT-2 not SMEE. The last SMEEs on the property were the R-32s which actually were delivered after the R-36s.

Good lord, who's complaining? When I was younger the only way I found out about a car class's imminent retirement was when I didn't see them anymore. The R16's disappeared overnight in the spring of 1987, I was waiting for them to come back as late as early 1988!

Unless an unexpected miracle...er, shortage occurs today, the last train containing an R-40M is running on the V, with 4484/4485 in the middle of 8 R-42's (would it end any other way?). All others were confirmed as out-of-service this morning, and the 4484/4485 is set to be "mothballed" after service today--Friday, August 28, 2009.

As stated, 4506/4507 and 4518/4519 remain on the Garbage Train so are technically the last operational cars of this type, though have been out of passenger service since July.

Bye-Bye, So Long and Farewell to the third class of 60-footers, now just two more to go.

Now I feel old. The R40S and R40M were the first cars that I rode when they arrived brand new, on the "F" Culver in 1968-69. Prior to the "F", in the "D" Culver days we only had R1/9 equipment, at least from what I remember. Post-Chrystie we were pleased to look up and see shiny R38s on the McDonald Avenue el.

What was the first "new" equipment you ever rode?

Jesus I feel old.

First new equipment I ever rode was an R-27 on the Brighton Line, probably in 1963.

I was coming home (alone) from my music lesson at the Brooklyn Music School on St. Felix St, and knew that the "new trains" were running, mixed in with the old Standards, because I had seen one of the new ones from the street carrying a big banner on the front announcing the new fleet.

So I let several trains pass me by until a new one came. I remember being amazed at how bright the tunnel wall became as the train came around the curve from DeKalb (at that time, neither the Standards nor the D-types carried headlights). I also thought the green-lights behind the directional signs were really cool, especially the way they illuminated the otherwise invisible word "To" in a little half-moon to the left of the destination roll.

And, because the storm doors on Standards and D-Types were always locked, I thought it was very cool that you could walk between cars, especially in the summer, when all the doors would be left open and you could see from one end of the train to the other.

But even then, I missed the wicker seats and the transverse seating, and the musical sound of the old motors and the compressors.

The only other problem was that I was so late getting home my parents were frantic and were really mad at me.

Initially, when the R-16s and later the R-27s were delivered, the bulkhead doors were kept locked between the cars like they were on the steels. Not too long after the delivery of the R-27s, the TA decided to leave the doors between 60 ft cars unlocked since they didn't present the same danger from a long end excess that the steels did.

The R27s must have seemed like wonder cars compared to the standards. But the standards did have a certain old-subway charm to them. The R1/9s had more of a classic industrial look to them.

Thre was a nice old man in my S.I. neighborhood who passed away a few years ago at age 97. He was about 16 when the SIRTOA went electric and remembered the days of steam service!

Ah 4484..........awright, it was in 1982, but 4484 was the car I was operating once when 600 volts got into the am-meter and the cab lit up with me in the seat!

So,without any fanfare, and largely unnoticed by most "Fans" another car class is lost and will very soon be history.

Well at least you posted it here. So therefore it wasn't totally overlooked by fans.

Take Pride,

Greetings Everyone!!! It looks like the end of the R40m's arrived sometime this morning as the 4484-85 operated in service for the last time on the "V" Line.It looks like this train operated in the early A.M. rush, and then was "laid Up" to Jamaica Yard.So for the record the consist was as follows: 4752-53,4660-61,4484-85(The Last Pair)4720-21,4763-62. This is it then, the end of the R40s in passenger service. They will be missed.Farewell to the greatness!

My guess would be the 32s are next, IMO last day the 32s run in service will give the R40 Slant last day in service a run for its money. Like in terms of intrest. Its going to be intersting to see the 42s last day in service, most likely its going to be on the (J) line. It would be funny if they ran the 42s on the Z with it laying up during the midday then coming into service for one last round trip on the (Z) before retiring. There would be a bunch of Railfans waiting on the Mantthan bound platform at Chauncy st station like its an fan trip on something lol.

They will be missed.Farewell to the greatness!

I agree!

Just talked to someone who was out on the V for about 2 hours and didn't see it. Looks like the train might've been pulled in earlier today.

What always amazed me is that many railfans myself included would stand and wait for the first train of new cars in order to ride it. Then, sometime later, the same railfans would stand and wait for the last train of the older cars that the new ones were intended to replace.

I rode a R-32 on the (V) today 3932 northbound head car, But noticed no R-40m's or R-42's. I did noticed more R-46's back on the (V).
