But yeah, throughout the entire string of old cars, they have to satisfy accountants and bureaucrats in distant financial centers and government who only know that R32 is older than R68 and therefore, first in, first out or there's a lot of 'splaining to do. I'm actually surprised that the teeyay managed to ditch the R40 wrecks before all the 32's were scrapped ...That said, I got to run 32's before they got turned into cyclops, and they were pretty good cars many years ago. They're not what they used to be though even if the carbodies haven't rotted away like what came later. Sadly, it's time for them to go despite the accountants ... :( |

They were really GREAT cars to operate (aside from the occasional "stuck cam") before they got their bulkheads and cabs destroyed by all the other "bling" installed ... they were peppy, they braked firmly, and weren't air conditioned. They were nice cars. That they lasted as long as they did, compared to their cousins, is a testimony to BUDD ...But lately, they're showing their age. :( |

About the only instance I can think of where cars from one city wound up elsewhere was the 6000-series cars that went from Chicago to Philadelphia, and then they ran on one of the non-subway lines. |

While technically not from another "city" per se, the original SIRT cars were sold to the NYCTA for BMT service. Also, the Miami rapid transit cars are identical and I believe from the same order as the Baltimore rapid transit cars. If the cars meet the clearances of another system, then they could conceivably be used there. The problem is that most other transit systems have some form of either outright ATO or a CBTC like form of cab signaling which would probably be difficult to easily retrofit to any of NYCT's non new tech trains. Also most of the other systems that could accommodate the R-32s are OPTO and due to the door placement on the R-32s, OPTO could not easily be done on the R-32s unless it is done with CCTV like Philly's M-F cars. |

Also, the Miami cars have the same dimensions (and interior layout) as the LACMTA Red/Purple line cars (in fact, 4 of the Miami cars were borrowed by then-SCRTD for testing when the Breda cars were delayed in delivery. I don't know if the Miami cars had to have changes in their signalling system to run on the Red Line tracks (it's possible that all the signalling hadn't yet been installed anyway). The Miami cars did not run in revenue service in L.A. For those interested, the cars were 126/127 (one of 2 mismatched pairs at Miami Metrorail) and 141/142. |

Where would they be kept, how would they be maintained, etc. At least in the post Transit Museum era an effort seems to be made to save something for future railfans to enjoy. Will at least two cars from all future scrapped fleets be saved?? I'll really feel old when the R46s are in the museum fleet. |

Okay I swear I'm getting tired of this and that some of y'all have issues that need to be worked out of this board, because it makes no damn sense that everytime you say something you get flamed.Going by the MDBF as of 12/2007 on NYCSubway R32 112,550 R40 121,793 R42 111,890 R44 106,743 R46 119,197 R68 220,388 R68A 273,954 R143 263,431 R160 I don't see the MDBF there but if you can find it post it What confuses the hell out of me is what made the 2 "true railfans" think you were talking about R160s when not once did you mention them. Based off that information you are right. the R32 had a horrible MDBF, the R40s were even better. There is only a 660 mile difference between the R32s and R42s. |
