"This is your last chance, ever" is a powerful motivation. These cars defined the system as I knew it, now with the bland robot cars the system holds little interest for me. The R44's and the 75' cars are next. Once they go, it's over. The subway becomes nothing to me but a bus on rails, or (more likely) "the office". I wonder if this is how old timers felt in the 60's and 70's, when the pre-war cars were retired. |

The 1st "new equipment" that I rode were the R142As on the 6 for the A Division and the R143s on the M for the B Division. As far as the R40Ms, I did see 4506-4507 with 4518-4519 on the garbage train at Queens Plaza yesterday headed towards 71 Ave. A minute later, R160s 9543-9552 showed up testing on the E headed towards Manhattan. My last rides on the R40M were back on 8-18-09 where I rode 4496 on the R and 4510 on the V. Both cars were ICE cold. Here are a few recent pics: BONUS pic: Enjoy!!! |

R38s were being delivered for my birthday although the first cars I can recall riding with my father were beat up old R1-9s on the CC and D Express. I actually didn't ride any R38s until I started middle school when they appeared on the CC as well growing up in Kingsbridge. I still remember the R32s with blue ceiling fans, mixed lighting of ad-car and center lighting and the policeman sticker warning of riding between cars. My dad took a ride once a Sunday to go to W4 Street to Sam Goody, the 69 cent store followed by the puppet matanee at Nathans or trip to orange Juilias. I never experienced a cold A/C on an R42 until I became a conductor and most of them had dark cars. One of my favorite operating cars, the R38. |

On the B division side, it was the R10's and 32's ... they were new compared to the arnines. :)But as I was growing up, the LoV's were being plucked quickly off the AyeArTee and so the proper answer I s'pose would be R17's and R21's. When they were replacing the R10s with the R30s, I avoided them like the plague until I couldn't wait no more which was when they were retiring the last 2 trainsets. One dispatcher who worked RPK saved them for putins for crews he knew wanted them so either I got a trip uptown running one or or I knew when to ride them if I didn't want to wait an hour. There is never a hurry to get on a new train, one day that will be all thats running. |
