They have to turn off the bus to attach/reattach it to the trolley wire, from what I've noticed. It takes a while.They should string new wire over the entire route (or at least to the airport) and extend it to the Airport station on the Blue Line. |

That's correct.As of today, the Silver Line has two sections -- Phase 1, the Washington Street line between downtown Boston and Dudley Square; and Phase 2, the Waterfront line, beginning in a tunnel at South Station and continuing to Logan Airport via the Ted Williams Tunnel (among a few other destinations.) The two sections of the Silver Line are currently isolated from each other and do not operate as one line. The MBTA is currently studying Silver Line Phase 3, a tunnel connecting the current Phase 2 terminus at South Station with the Phase 1 Washington Street line. |

Rather than to build a real subway or LRT the MBTA decided to be cheap and have a quasi bus/light rail route.It wasn't a matter of the MBTA being cheap. The Feds refused to provide funding for a Green Line extension along Washington Street because they considered the route to be too close to the Orange Line heavy-rail route they just paid for. The MBTA then proposed a trolley bus service but this was opposed for years by the light-rail advocates and the project was delayed. By the time the service was ready to go, this was changed to today's articulated CNG buses. For the Waterfront route, rail may have been an option but it could only have been a short line to the waterfront. An underwater rail tunnel to the airport was out of the question. |

"That makes sense. Projects from different cities compete against each other. Why should the Feds pay for a new project right next to an existing parallel project in Boston when another city is asking for money to build a train where there is none? The notable exception is New York, because the "next door" train is two long blocks away and is already packed like sardine cans, so the ridership is there for a new parallel line. There's no risk SAS trains will be running empty. |

As it us, the MBTA is currently broke thanks to the massive interest payments they are making for previously-built projects. |
