"The Feds refused to provide funding for a Green Line extension along Washington Street because they considered the route to be too close to the Orange Line heavy-rail route they just paid for. "That makes sense. Projects from different cities compete against each other. Why should the Feds pay for a new project right next to an existing parallel project in Boston when another city is asking for money to build a train where there is none? The notable exception is New York, because the "next door" train is two long blocks away and is already packed like sardine cans, so the ridership is there for a new parallel line. There's no risk SAS trains will be running empty. |
