Hi guys,

On a couple of other sites it stated that Woodhaven Blvd / Slattery Plaza was the name for this subway stop and for the intersection of Queens Blvd. & Woodhaven Blvd. I seem to remember that when I was a college student (circa 1971-1975) I used to go shopping there, and it wa s already in those days an indoor shopping mall, i.e. the antecedent of the Queens Center Mall.

Unless my memory is totally buggy, in those days wasn't the mall called "Woodhaven Mall" or "Slattery Plaza?" Also - wasn't there an entrance, via the mezzanine level of the subway, to the basement level of one of the department stores? I AM certain of this, b/c I never actually stepped outside when shopping in that mall. The windows are still there, or remnants of them, but nowadays you cannot see into the store through them, nor can you enter the mall via the subway.

the truth is: I never saw the Queens / Woodhaven Blvd. intersection itself until I returned to the area in 2005, when I started working at the Elmhurst Jennifer Convertibles.

Does anyone else have similar memories of the mall in the early - mid 1970's?

Cheers,
Frantic

As far as I know it was always called the Queens Center mall since it opened with A&S and Ohrbachs as the anchors. I don't think that there was ever a direct entrance from the subway. Before the mall was built there used to be a kiddie amusement park (Fairyland) and a discount store (Billy Blake at one time) with a parking lot.

Hi Frantic, just a wee bit of Queens history. Slattery Plaza is the old name of the station area. Four major thoroughfares met at this area - Eliot Avenue and Horace Harding, Woodhaven and Queens Boulevards. When the LIE was constructed along the HH corridor, Slattery Plaza effectively was destroyed. In 1972, Queens Center Mall first opened and IIRC there hasn`t been direct indoor access to QCM from the full length mezzanine - the entrance on the north side of QB and 59th Avenue being the closest. In 1972, one came to QCM via the (EE) or the (GG). :)

Unfortunately I do remember this shopping area. Allow me to explain,

In the 60`s and 70`s my mom her friends and my sisters used to go shopping there, dragging me along. The best part of the trip for me was riding the GG from Classon Ave. to Woodhaven Blvd. There was no mezzanine entry to the stores that I recall. It was downhill from there. As they tried on garments and such I occupied my self play with straight pins, pretending they were trains. Couldn`t wait to get back on the GG to go home.

I tease my Mom to this day and say, "That`s why I hate shopping."

This should have been an express stop from day 1. Continental Ave should have been a local stop and Union Tpke. should have been the terminal for local service.

Definately Fairyland.
There was also Billy Blake there. But that place had nothing to do with the rides and games at Fairyland. You'd have to be a kid to understand that.

45 odd years ago, it was THE place to spend a day for kids in that part of Queens to dream about going. After blowing your parents fortune there was going to White Castle at 90th Street for something to eat.

Maybe at one point there was a subway entrance in front. But if there was, it's 35 years gone.

Didn't the IND plan to eventually convert it to an express?

Although at the time it would have made any express line pointless with so few stops being skipped.

If the line from lower Roosevelt Avenue Terminal station and the Rockaway-Winfield spur had been constructed, Woodhaven Boulevard Slattery Plaza would've been converted into an express station.

What would one have to do with the other? The only benefit there would be easing the local/express transfer congestion on those narrow platforms at Roosevelt.

Chris R16 R27/30, The Winfield Spur coming from Roosevelt Avenue would've tied into the Rockaway Line at Central Avenue in the 1929 plan. There're bellmouths not only at Woodhaven Boulevard but at 63d Drive and 67th Avenue.

Looking at things under current layout, I think it's for the best that it has remained a local station, because it would have ruined the express run (which isn't the greatest to begin with). It would almost be like Nostrand Ave on the Fulton. The express only skips one station [Kingston-Throop] between its stops at that section.

Chris R16 R27/30 has an interesting point about Union Turnpike but I agree. The express skips five stations on each side of Roosevelt Avenue. Interesting that the (E) and the (F) both are local in Manhattan and the (F) in Brooklyn.

I think the picture is after 1969. Wasn't the Ferris Wheel just to the east of the building and just north of QB?. It should have been visible in this picture.

I found the same picture on the 'net last Thursday night and wondered where the wheel was.

If memory serves me the roller coaster was behind and to the left of the Ferris Wheel.

Maybe the Ferris Wheel should have been seen in the picture unless it was the first ride torn down or it was never that high to begin with. The Roller Coaster would have been easily seen if the game room wasn't there.

I've read elsewhere -- no citations available, just memory -- that Slattery Plaza is the name of the grade separation at Queens & Woodhaven Boulevards. John R. Slattery was Deputy Chief Engineer of the BoT from 1925 until his death in 1932.
