The SIR R44s are in fairly bad condition as well but it was stated by the Staten Island Transit Task Force that the R44s are not going to be replaced until at least 2011. |

If you think the 44`s end bonnets are bad try looking at the belt line area and undeneath the door sils. Saw a few in S.I. that have actual rust holes, in fact 1 or 2 of those are in C.I. for either repair or scrap their bodies are rusting away like the standard up at Branford. Bye Bye R44`S, nobody will miss you. |

When I first became a railfan, the 32's were usually assigned to lines which had other cars I liked a lot more, so seeing them still brings disappointment. If I wanted an R46 on the N/R or G, I hated seeing the R32. Particularly in the summer. |

I also remember when the R-32s were brand spanking new. In fact, my very first subway ride was on a shiny new R-32 N train on July 21, 1965. It's a shame my father didn't photograph me sitting next to one of their signboxes with "57th St." or "Coney Island" backlit in green. Yes, they did replace the venerable Triplexes, which IMHO were sent to slaughter much too soon. They were still in tip-top shape and running beautifully. Supposedly, Budd was cranking out the R-32s so fast that they would have run out of storage space at CIY had the Triplexes been kept. |

Whether the car even HAS a center band (that is separate from the rest of the shell) is the distinguishing characteristic. As you can see in the photo, the center band is quite different from the rest of the shell. Either way, they are just as bad as the Redbirds under the skin. Huh? R-46's are not "just as bad", which is why that can't be an R-46. |
