R142....188,014....386,026...DOWN 198,012R143....303,811....180,101...UP 123,710 Huge changes here! I wonder if the R142s big change has anything to do with the brake issue mentioned on here. Also, what is MDBF a measure of? I know that this doesn't mean that every R143 travels 303,811 miles before a breakdown. Is this the distance that the whole fleet travels before a breakdown? |

Just barely edges out the R143, which is surprising to me. I didn't think any New Techs would do better than the R62/62A/68/68A series. |

The R68 doesn't deserve to be king. It's ugly, tarnished, dirty. In all, a total eyesore. Besides, their ride sucks. Give me the shine of the R62s/R62As any day. It's not so much "haters" but rather the fact that the R32 is very over-rated within the rail fan community. The MDBF figures should confirm this fact. The numbers don't lie. |

Based on the detioration of the Jamaica fleet's MDBF numbers (I wonder if "their" R32's MDBF is under 100,000 miles due to higher mileage requirements in Queens), it may be a good idea for NYCT car equipment suits to think about bringing back a certain contributor to this board, providing he is willing to take on the responsibility. It seems wherever he goes, the MDBF numbers go up! |

Regardless, they are often viewed as one of Budd's finest products and that their all-stainless construction will last up to 50 years or more. Budd's M-1s built between 1968 and 1973, on the other hand only lasted into their mid 30s. |

It would be interesting to see the statistics calculated the same way for the five series of cars in the WMATA fleet.I would hazard a guess the MDBF for 1K cars would be the highest and the fleet average overall would be lower then what's shown in those numbers. There are other factors beyond MDBF. AMoreira81 asks elsewhere in the thread whether Transit releases the mean time out of service. There is also the question of how much money is being spent per car to keep it in service. The R32 may be down on MDBF, but if Transit has to spend a lot more time and money to keep the R38, R40, and R42 in operating order, they may go first, even if they have better MDBF numbers. |

I'm not going to debate whether the R-32 is overrated or underrated or anything else, but MDBF is but one particular metric. When a train of R-32's pulls in on the B, I'm happy, because I'll be able to sit in a comfortable seat and because the train won't rattle so much. In other words, when I'm simply riding the train to work, I'm more interested in my own comfort than in MDBF. |

All true, but when it comes time to get rid of cars, the TA will not keep the most 'comfortable" trains, they will get rid of the ones that cause the most headache, and that may be the ones with the least MDBF. |

Most likely the Jamaica R32's are suffering because of high mileage demands on that particular line. I don't think it's wise to keep them on a 24/7 route that heavily used. First thing I'd do is swap the entire V fleet with the E's R32's and make sure all the Kings Highway F's are R32's as well. That should ease their deterioration. |

Well, they are not going to get rid of the R143's or R142's, so, I wouldn't worry about that....and the R40's lasted this long, so I don't think the compaints on the seats are going to be anything to worry about. As a sidenote though.....I don't find the problem with the seats on the R142-143's that others here seem to express. Or actually, the general public? I have heard plenty of complaints for example about seating on the M7's, everything from size to the armrests.....but is there any published compaints about seating in the R142-143's, or is that some SubChatTalk? |

Well, someone did (not you), but even so, it's a topic that runs hand and hand with reliablity or condition of cars. Cars are being scrapped in the near future, so this is a concern when it comes to MDBF, and perfectly on topic to this topic. |

The R32s at one time were quite reliable. On my last visit to New York in April, I took two rides on R32s and I could sense the deterioration of the propulsion and braking systems. Although the Budd carbodies could last another 40 years, the same can't be said for what makes 'em go and stop.I have another gripe about the R32s, dating to the days when they were brand-new. And that's for sentimental reasons. They replaced the Triplexes, a favorite of mine. As a teenager then, I took many trips out to Coney Island to witness the Ds stacked on top of each other like cordwood. Milantram San Francisco |

I never said it's off-topic.Look at the subject line. The worst car is not necessarily the one with the lowest MDBF rating. The best car is not necessarily the one with the highest MDBF. I have no idea how they compute MDBF. But my guess is that there is no factoring - they add up the actual DBFs for each car in the class over the time period and then divide by the total number of cars represented. |

Several members of the general public have expressed similar opinions about the seats to me.The issue is not that the seats aren't luxuriously wide. The issue is not that there are armrests in unfortunate locations. The issue is that, the way the seats are contoured, some people have to bend their backs in ways that their backs don't bend in order to fit. |

Understood, although, again, they are not getting rid of the R142-143, so it's a non-issue for what they will scrap. Again, I am sure they will be looking at the MDBF first, before "comfort" of seats (at least in the case of cars on death row, like the R40's). |

The point is that if a given line runs two types of old cars, and they both eventually need to be replaced with R-160 cars, and if the R-160 cars have less comfortable seats than both of the old car classes, and if the old car class with the lower MDBF has the most comfortable seats, then the riders might complain if the cars with the lower MDBF but most comfortable seats are replaced first. |

Bring all the R-32`s back to Coney island Yard and watch their MDBF go right back to where it was and should be. Jamaica yard is to busy with the R-46`S to give the 32`s the proper care. |

Actually i meant it as a joke, not like I really care since I depend more on the R142 anyway. But eh not going to change the fact most of the R32's will still outlast the R38-42 at least. |
