One thing you underestimate is the logistics of supporting multiple fleets of cars. Parts inventories, lack of flexibility, etc. Coney Island already supports more car classes than any other maintenance shop. Fewer car classes makes for more efficiency.

No, no, I understand. I'm just wondering what sense it makes to keep what is, in effect, one trainset around, since its availability is nil if just 2 cars have problems.

Doesn't CI have all types of parts anyway; for overhauls? At any rate, where are the CI cars maintained, right in the main barn where SMS also takes place?

Sorry for the rambling.

No - Coney Island Maintenance Shop and Coney Island Overhaul shop are 2 seperate entities. The fleet is maintained at the maintenance shop and the overhaul shop has entirely different management, budget and function.
