Monorail On Second Ave ? |
|
|
Posted by TonyD on Thu Jan 13 22:29:32 2005 Why not a monorail on Second Avenue or Third Avenue ? There are some new technologies that address the traditional limitations of monorails such as switching. It might be cheaper than a subway and a lot more fun. |

Posted by tracksionmotor on Thu Jan 13 23:58:30 2005, in response to Monorail On Second Ave ?, posted by TonyD on Thu Jan 13 22:29:32 2005. As a child, I grew up with monorail transportation traveling all over the country on vacation trips with my mother. The monorails I rode upon were primarily built as tourist attractions rather than mass transit (like the system recently sold from 'Dutch Wonderland' in Pennsylvania.) There were the 'Worlds Fairs' of the sixties...I don't remember if 'Freedom Land' had one...slow speed local transport.Easy to build with I-beam construction straddling medians of interstate highways...light rail at medium speed unobstructed by anything. Switches are no problem as most are never designed for high speed approach. The 'trick' was that the monorail was cost-effective and easy to construct. The 'treat' was that monorail compeated with existing transportation systems and would become a victim of more modern 'transportation holocausts.' Why did Montreal build a subway using rubber-tired cars when they could have spent more money laying tracks? (The HVAC systems in-car had major Freon leaks...so much that they were shut down and perforated stainless steel sheets replaced some windows.) Montreal, If I remember correctly, had monorail at Expo 67. Poking a steel I-beam up in the air is far cheaper than laying tracks. Just look at Bombardiers 'JFK plane to the train.' What's in those concrete tubes??? I'd like to see a monorail on the I-80 route towards Penssylvania instead of the $ 250 Mil + for a Lackawanna rebuild. Gimme a Redbird anyday. |

The only fully operational semi-automated monorail in continous use in NYC of record is the the one that travels about the perimeter of the Bronx Zoo. It 'homes' directly behind the East 180th inspection barn. The public assumes mass transit means getting you to your destination FAST not understanding headway or passenger discharge/access. |

True, but it is part of PATH and not NYCTA. Also, the system was shut down totally because of structural defects in the concrete supporting columns. The closest NYCTA came to that was reinforcing the 'pre war' pebble concrete of the #7 line...same stuff that many bridges and overpasses in New Jersey had to replace. What you can do with monorails is sink steel i-beams with concrete support columns without regard to surface topography at far less expense. The Erie Lackawanna cut is an example of pre-tech that was labor intensive.Someone mentioned the inablility of integrating monorail into transit but I have to point out that 'Bombardier train to the plane' as well as Jersey City light rail don't integrate either. Sadly, monorails remain the subject of airports and amusement parks. |

Posted by willD on Tue Jan 18 09:13:58 2005, in response to Simpsons Monorail Joke played out, posted by Olog-hai on Mon Jan 17 15:18:56 2005. Despite the interminable anti-transit jokes which any monorail related thread engenders, who said anything about converting the entire subway system to use a monorail? I believe the issue was that if the 2nd Ave Subway was going to remain unrealized well into this century then it might be better for the people of 2nd ave and the UES if the M15 was supplanted by a monorail running down 2nd ave, moving the transit there off the street. Admittedly it'd be hard to get past the NIMBYs and such, just as the 2nd Ave subway is proving to be, but there is the chance that it could be done before the 2nd Ave subway would be done. The 'problems' of compatibility inheirent in monorails would not be all that big a deal, since the SAS is only supposed to have 2 lines run on it anyway, the T being a monorail won't kill the system. Such a monorail could serve as a backbone for monorails running crosstown on 23rd, 34th, 42nd, 57th and 125th or something, thereby eliminating the need for most of those bus lines which would parallel them. |

Posted by Broadway Junction on Tue Jan 18 15:33:00 2005, in response to Re: Simpsons Monorail Joke played out, posted by willD on Tue Jan 18 09:13:58 2005. A monorail in NYC would face two seemingly unsurmountable problems: elevated structure and incompatibility. If NIMBY opposition to elevateds could be overcome, then why not build an El compatible with the rest of the system? And if incompatibility issues could be ignored, why not build light rail? Light rail would be more appropriate than a monorail for replacing bus routes. Building a monorail also precludes the oppurtunity to extend the SAS to hook up with an existing line in another borough (such as the LIRR Atlantic Line, or the 4th Ave, or the SIR, or the Concourse, etc, etc...) |

Well as long as either a light rail or monorail is not compatible with the subway, it will be seen as a waste although on the light rail issue I believe the results/criticism won't be as bad. I do agree however that there is no need for a monorail in the city BUT it wouldn't be so bad in Staten Island for example; anyway the residents will shoot it down so that's moot. |

It's not as futurisic as the monorail of 'Dutch Wonderland.' You could have bought it for a few grand when the place went under auction. The pic does justice to my postings...a single i-beam supported by concrete bedded posts. The public thinks monorails are high-speed transport and dissapointed about the lack of speed. The reality is that they travel onobstructed with a constant head-on. Thanks. |

We once stayed at SafariPark off route 222. The monorail was sold intact in good condition according to the article in Express Times and its fans got one last ride before it was shut down. The monorail was built by a company specialising in amusement park rides and not by a rail-builder. It had many years of reliable service with minimum costs versus a certain FOREIGN MANUFACTURE system which cost nearly a billion dollars that serves very few and took the life of a TO. Incidently, the weight simulation plates used for final acceptance of the R142s were welded corrugated interlocking plates that secured to the floor and each pack weighed approximatly 500 pounds each.
