As a child, I grew up with monorail transportation traveling all over the country on vacation trips with my mother. The monorails I rode upon were primarily built as tourist attractions rather than mass transit (like the system recently sold from 'Dutch Wonderland' in Pennsylvania.) There were the 'Worlds Fairs' of the sixties...I don't remember if 'Freedom Land' had one...slow speed local transport.
Easy to build with I-beam construction straddling medians of interstate highways...light rail at medium speed unobstructed by anything. Switches are no problem as most are never designed for high speed approach. The 'trick' was that the monorail was cost-effective and easy to construct. The 'treat' was that monorail compeated with existing transportation systems and would become a victim of more modern 'transportation holocausts.' Why did Montreal build a subway using rubber-tired cars when they could have spent more money laying tracks? (The HVAC systems in-car had major Freon leaks...so much that they were shut down and perforated stainless steel sheets replaced some windows.) Montreal, If I remember correctly, had monorail at Expo 67. Poking a steel I-beam up in the air is far cheaper than laying tracks. Just look at Bombardiers 'JFK plane to the train.' What's in those concrete tubes??? I'd like to see a monorail on the I-80 route towards Penssylvania instead of the $ 250 Mil + for a Lackawanna rebuild. Gimme a Redbird anyday.
