The you could hang his/her ass if you choose to do so.I've heard many bogus stories from cops especially that photography in the subways has been illegal ever since 9-11-01. If I was a lawyer, I'd search for the actual proof for that to be true. But AS of NOW, IT IS FALSE. But yet you have some of these cops that have their heads so far up their own asses, that they think almost anything is illegal and will enforce these stupid laws that are the most idiotic that I've ever heard...IE Drinking a bottle of water on the Subway. Oh Puh-Lease!!!! I'm so sick of hearing these damn stories of people getting harassed for something that is legit to do. This world is making me so sick to my stomach. By this action, these donut eaters are letting the terrorists win by making us live in fear, a fear of our freedom being taken away. If photography in the system was illegal-then I'd understand. But this is just bullfunky. |

Needless to say, I immediately hopped on the next train and remained silent. I'm currently waiting for the NYCLU to call me back regarding the matter, and in the meantime, I'm rather apprehensive about taking photos in the near future. The whole incident really riled me up, in only my second time out. I was having a lot of fun too.Don't let this put an end to your photo-taking career. A minor incident like this shouldn't stop you from partaking in transport photography. Most police officers -- especially those patrolling the further-out stations -- won't do this to you, they'll probably just ask you a few questions and then you can be off on your merry way. But I agree that some of the things that the cop did were ridiculous. Putting your camera in his pocket? He really overstepped his authority and needs to be reprimanded about that. I've only had a few incidents while dealing with the police and transport photography; the worst was back in 2004, when I snapped a photo of a (Q) train at Parkside Avenue and got the usual 9/11 speech from an undercover officer who happened to be standing nearby. I also was questioned by Metra police while at Galewood Metra station in western Chicago last month; fortunately, they didn't even bother to get out of their police car, and only asked me what I was doing and why. |

If they get caught, they've screwed up big time. It is much safer to be discreet than to be open and have to face questioning. It would be sooooooooooo easy to take photos with a hidden camera or even a cell phone camera and no one would ever know. As such, only the railfans, who shoot in the open, get hassled. |

Polstein, an 18-year veteran of the force, created a website in 1999 after he had repeatedly been passed up for promotions he felt he earned. He wanted to express himself and came up with the title NYPD Rant, using the screen name "Polecat." The site became a forum, mainly for disgruntled law enforcement officers. NYPD Rant took off, becoming so popular that it averaged about 60,000 hits a day. That is a lot of people with a gripe. Since Polstein's dismissal from the department, however, those numbers have dropped by about 20,000, probably because of those who are frightened the site will be policed, turning their private ranting into a public dismissal. NYPD Rant at one point displayed a photo of Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly that morphed into Popeye and then into Adolf Hitler addressing his storm troopers. How will that person know if they do a background check? Ambulance volunteers have to sign a form. The form does mention a background check. The sheriff's office will not give us this information unless they have a form from us indicating the person's interest in joining our squad. When the ambulance renews its insurance, the insurance company does a check against driver licenses. Anybody can request driver license information in North Dakota, since these are a matter of public record. DMV sends the driver a note saying who requested information, but not why. A credit background check can be made by almost anybody without the subject knowing about it. Likewise there are places on the internet, where for a small fee, they will give you the goods on anybody in their database. Again, you would never know it was done. |

I don't think it's the worst thing in the world. If I had know farther in advance that I'd be in Boston this coming weekend, I would've gone through the MBTA Photo ID program, just in case -- if stopped, cops know that you've already consented to a security check, and passed. However, the difference there, of course, is that the MBTA has a rule in place preventing photography (while NYCT does not) without the pass. Then again, I'm not sure what happens on here when one of us fails to pass the security check for whatever the reason. |

A funny thing, my father worked for US Rubber at the time and we even rode on that Ferris wheel, but even though my father had his camera and took a few pics that day, he didn't take one of that giant tire of a Ferris wheel. Go figure. He did take a picture of my sister and me with the Unisphere and NY State towers in the background. You can duplicate that scene today, as both of those landmarks are still there. |

I'm not saying that photography is only a slight terrorism risk -- I'm saying that photography is not a terrorism risk at all. Terrorists do not stand in public areas taking pictures with full-size cameras.Londoners are very serious about terrorism. That's why they don't waste their time worrying about photographers. The public needs to be educated of this fact, and the police need to respond in kind. If I told a cop that I thought the guy sitting on the train across from me was a terrorist because he was listening to an iPod, would he confront him, demand ID, and confiscate his iPod? Of course not. Because there's no reason whatsoever to suspect him of terrorism. Just as there's no reason whatsoever to suspect a photographer of terrorism. |
