And to think, some people say the the R142 is "too bright".It is! Dark cars are cool. I only got to ride dark trains twice - one was the Redbird Ramble in December 2003 and the other was an R143 L train going through 14th where the lights mysteriously went out for no apparent reason. I also saw a dark L train (also an R143) pull in going the other way at Bushwick-Aberdeen once (I didn't even know it was in service until the lights came back on). |

Here were are complaining about the R16's, IRT cars, R30's...but damn, were thoswe R10's bad!!! If it is even possible to get worse than the look filth and disrepair of an R16, the R10's "may" have done it. Before they became green, those were some really BAD looking trains. They were SO trashed. |

The storm doors hooked open was pretty common back then. In fact, it was the norm in the summer (except of course on the R44-46's). But everything else basically had the doors hooked open, and all the windows open. It's hard to even think of today, but it was the norm. The sounds were different in the subway then, as you heard EVERYTHING in the tunnels as they passed through, or the sounds on the Williamsburg bridge with all the windows and end doors open.Just think of a fan trip every day, but it was nothing unusual. |

The seeds were planted int he 60's, as looking at photos, you can see things crumbling, graffiti just didn't hit in full force yet though. You are so right about the eons comment about the 1968 plan. From 1976 to about 1986, the subway just had no hope, and was just a complete shambles. It wasn't until around 1989 (even though they started slightly earlier) that it seemed, "Hey, maybe they "can" do it". Before that, I would jsut think it was a joke when I came across a train with freshly painted orange doors around 1984 or 1985. WIthin two weeks you couldn't tell. |

The M train from Central to Fresh Pond didn't get into the graffiti-free program until 1991, and there was much of the Bronx elevated stations yet to go, and even some Culver (F) stations that I know of. It's not until 1993 or so that they were all in it. |

Although I'd moved out of the city by then, I was still going TO the city 3 days a week or more to maintain studios I had contracts with, as well as consulting work for ABC Sports in Lodi which required trips into Madhattan to get paid. Rode plenty and was appalled at the continuing decay. Only "good" thing was that I only saw 205th once in that time showing "Bingbong" my old haunts in Norwood and Kingsbridge. Pretty damned natty. :( |

It was common practice on the R-33 singles on the 7 until they were retired. On the few cars with publicly accessible latches to hold the doors open (R-62A singles and R-62's), it's also done when the air conditioning conks out. |

I've been on D trains that have had the lights off into 36, but somebody usually notices at that point. A few weeks ago I got excited when a dark D pulled in at Pacific (northbound), but the lights went on before I got on.I was also once on an N train that turned its lights off at 8th Avenue for the Sea Beach cut. (Lots of fun in the mini-tunnels!) When the new T/O stepped on at Kings Highway, he scratched his head and turned on the lights. |

Those of us who are a little older remember the subways from an even earlier time, and experienced first-hand the descent into the hell that the picture represents.It was one of the most discouraging times in the history of the city, not just the subways, and I doubt that many of us really believed they would rebound the way they have. So for me, there is almost nothing to be nostalgic about in that era. |

Holy crap, the first time I saw a red R30 on the M was around that time. I was with my high school girlfriend waiting for the M to come to take us to school. I wasn't even looking up, and all of a sudden she said, "Ooooooohhhhh, how pretty, a red train". I glanced up at this "thing" pulling in, and screamed something in fright to the effect of, "What the f is that"!!!! We walked on like were were entering a UFO or something. I think I then said, "Ahh, it'll never last"......Only someone who grew up or knew that error would understand that last comment, as the mentality really was that it would be trashed within a week back then. I thankfully was proven wrong..... |

There does seem to be a dearth of railfanning once the 80's began. Even Testagrose stopped snapping photos after about 1981 or so. Zabel got a lot of pics from this era, but he was an employee who HAD to be in the system. There also seems that there were no real fantrips between 1981 and 1988. |

The guy I mentioned that lived around 92nd said that what was happening around the time he left (I am not sure of the year), was that unscroupulous real estate people were participating in blockbusting. He said they would come in, and scare people about the horrors of what was overtaking the neighborhood so they would get scared, sell low, and get out. Then would go to the next, and say you better sell now before it gets bad.Well his building finally became one of these, and then the new landlord made the building hell. Tenants left, and then noisy trashy people would move in, and make the building hell. That's when he left too, as he said it became unbarable in the building, and the whole block. And this was happening all over the neighborhood at the time. Again, he said it never got "that" bad, not as far down like many other neighborhoods did (the whole city was in trouble in various stages actually), but it certainly was not pretty what was going on either. He said it became more hell than pleasant. |

Yes, we got a random red R30 before 1986. Then even our graffitied R30's left, and the R16's began to infest the line, especially around the fall of 1986. And YES, we saw very well that the J was getting all the nice R30's, ane we were stuck with the R16's. I remember sitting in an R16 one day after school wondering what we as M riders must have done to deserve these shit trains (R16). (If the Eastern Division was the ass of the subway system, then the M was the ass of the Eastern Division).Then, as fast as they infested the M, they seemed to disappear, almost overnight. We then got the graffitied R30's back again, and an occasional red one. Slowly, the red ones began to take over, and finally overtake the graffitied ones, and then all of a sudden, it was the late 80's, and all of a sudden a GOHed R42 pulled in. It took me by surprise, but I was already over the "It can't happen" mentality by then. It honestly took me about three stations to figure out that it was actually the old blue doored R42's resurected. I honestly couldn't tell if it was a brand new train or not. They "looked" like the older trains, but then again, they looked BRAND new. And they smelled so good. "New car scent", and the nice cool air conditioning (it was fall, but warm yet) blowing. "This wasn't your father's subway anymore"...... |

I was once on a nothbound F train which had it's lights off on the el. They remained off all the way to Carroll St. It really freaks some people out. If there's no tunnel lighting from outside, you can't see ANYTHING, even your hands in front of your face. Total, absolute darkness can be very un-nerving. |
