The guy I mentioned that lived around 92nd said that what was happening around the time he left (I am not sure of the year), was that unscroupulous real estate people were participating in blockbusting. He said they would come in, and scare people about the horrors of what was overtaking the neighborhood so they would get scared, sell low, and get out. Then would go to the next, and say you better sell now before it gets bad.Well his building finally became one of these, and then the new landlord made the building hell. Tenants left, and then noisy trashy people would move in, and make the building hell. That's when he left too, as he said it became unbarable in the building, and the whole block. And this was happening all over the neighborhood at the time. Again, he said it never got "that" bad, not as far down like many other neighborhoods did (the whole city was in trouble in various stages actually), but it certainly was not pretty what was going on either. He said it became more hell than pleasant. |
