The storm doors hooked open was pretty common back then. In fact, it was the norm in the summer (except of course on the R44-46's). But everything else basically had the doors hooked open, and all the windows open. It's hard to even think of today, but it was the norm. The sounds were different in the subway then, as you heard EVERYTHING in the tunnels as they passed through, or the sounds on the Williamsburg bridge with all the windows and end doors open.
Just think of a fan trip every day, but it was nothing unusual.
