I agree with the "it depends" response, but I question your clock. Running time on the 1 train from Van Cortlandt (which is north of Washington Heights) to Times Square (which is south of the Upper West Side) is about 35 minutes. Where's the other 25 minutes coming from? Also, unless you have a reserved parking space or you're willing to pay a lot in a garage, it can take a very long time to find parking in many parts of the city (including, speaking from extensive experience here, the Upper West Side -- I once gave up after several hours and parked in Astoria). That's not an issue with transit. |

It depends on where you're going, what time of day, and other random factors.Example: the J train physically moves a lot faster than the traffic below, even in the middle of the night when there IS no traffic. However, you would probably beat the J by driving if you were going to/from Manhattan or between Jamaica and Broadway, because of the slow sections. |

I get you guys' points, I misinterpreted the accidents as being at a faster speed but I forgot that both were because of human error. Isn't that why the things are there in the first place? This isn't a railfan world where every express run can be this great 60+ mph express run. |

After reading this entire thread, I'm surprised nobody else pointed this out. You've been saying through this whole thread that Philly trains are run by computers. Last time I checked (9 or 10 hours ago), you were wrong. As we all know, Philly trains regularly go through the 60s, sometimes even into the 70s. But the trains aren't run by computers. They are run by *gasp* humans. Even more frightening... the Broad Street line uses ... wait for it ... block signaling. |

There are many levels of CBTC like ATC/ATO/ATS and so much more. It all depends upon what you want a trainset to do, the degree of implimentation, how you can modify the system for CBTC, how much are you willing to pay for it AND safety standards. Biggest obstacle in NYCT subways is public acceptance of an 'operatorless trainset.' Taking any 100 year old design and moving it up a century in technology is a tough call and a huge expense. The next NYCT subway CBTC project is the #7. This line like Canarsie L is independent of the system and I believe there are 90 Kawaski R142As available. All Bombardier and Kawasaki R142 contract cars have 'open slots' for CBTC...just don't have the second TOD like R143s. I EXPECT full conversion not to happen in my working lifetime. IF and WHEN the SAS is built, it too will be an independent system implementing full CBTC. I just got the word that a lot of my mechanical/electrical modification work has been handed over to a subcontractor on the next MNCR married pair...presumably for our closed crew doing contract Periodic Inspection...work I know well on the RIP TRAX. Carknockers RULE! One of my railbuddys pointed out to me I must always maintain my focus on my work...a former CED chair. Right TD? ATB&GB RRCI Peter |

My commute from Riverdale-VCP area to downtown WTC is 32 minutes via Bway to Dyckman-HHP around the lunchtime crowds. Going home I can do it in 25 via the FDR-Willis Ave Bridge and the Deegan. Driving to Bedford Pk to pick up a Lexington Avenue train is 15 minutes plus parking time, and 47 minutes to Fulton St once I'm on the train and forget about the bus. HHP has been good to us here, the flooding occurs north of Farragut, the school bus last week didn't quite knock down the bridge at W256 and my bike parks where no man could park a car before. And cheaper too. At 45 MPG, no tolls and $7.50 per week in the tank I cut my trip time in half and no metrocard discounts come close. I'll take my chances on the parkway before I sit another day in traffic on the IRT. |

My mother or father (depending on whose turn it is to drive me) take me to school at approximately 8:05 AM each weekday. Traffic is always flawless, unless an accident has occurred, in which case, ~5 minutes are added to my commute.I almost always use the subway to commute home, except for the lucky times when my mom is willing to pick me up. This commute occurs around 3-4PM. Traffic is never heavy. The subway never comes close. If my parents aren't willing to drive me in the morning (thankfully, this happens infrequently), I have to leave the house by 7:15 to arrive on time (Broadway IRT from 181st street to 242nd terminal.) |

MetroNorth identifies ATC as part of cab signals. I modify and repair the ATC pick-up units will a full understanding of the system but did not receive ATC certification because I am not an 'electrician.' ATC on M7s is the lowest part of a EMU second only to the snow shield and is struck by everything on the trax damaging the Faraday shield which isolates the two pick-up coils from the tractionmotors. My work was just handed over to a subcontractor to be done by laborers after I trained a few guys how to do the work per MNCR requirements. They can have it! RRCI Peter |
