I agree with the "it depends" response, but I question your clock. Running time on the 1 train from Van Cortlandt (which is north of Washington Heights) to Times Square (which is south of the Upper West Side) is about 35 minutes. Where's the other 25 minutes coming from?

Also, unless you have a reserved parking space or you're willing to pay a lot in a garage, it can take a very long time to find parking in many parts of the city (including, speaking from extensive experience here, the Upper West Side -- I once gave up after several hours and parked in Astoria). That's not an issue with transit.
