Troubles on the Brighton Line in Brooklyn This Morning |
|
|
Posted by heypaul on Wed Apr 15 22:20:09 2026 I was at Ave U and heading into the Manhattan this morning around 10, when I noticed the arrival board announcing that due to a train that went BIE at Dekalb Ave, there was no n/b Q & B service heading into Manhattan. We were advised to go to Coney Island, where B & Q's would be running over the N & D lines. So I scooted down the pigeon dropping stairs and up the stairs to Coney Island platform, where I waited for 10 or 15 minutes with nothing heading southbound. On top of that, I realized that due to track work any train that did come would terminate at Brighton Beach, where shuttle buses would take us to Stillwell terminal. Then the arrival board was saying that there were delays in Q and B service. Well that sounded promising. About 5 minutes later, B and Q service was said to have resumed. So I lumbered back over to the n/b platform and waited about 10 minutes before I saw headlights heading our way. It was an R68 B which was being rerouted over the Q line. All of this is a warmup to some questions: Would there be a difference between an R211 going BIE and an R68 going BIE? I mean would a NT train be harder to go back into normal operation than an older technology train? Although the R211's have been around for awhile, this has been my first experience riding them, when they came on the B. I like them. They're quieter and faster and fun to ride. I wonder how the crews find operating them? |

I got on a train at Cortelyou at about 8:50 and it went to Church Ave and then held. A B also pulled in and held. After about 10-15 minutes they finally tell us that we're not going anywhere for a while. That's an hour before your experience. What cars had the problem? R46, R68 or R211? And what exactly happened? |

If you were experiencing the problem over an hour before 10, it must have been something serious. Were there announcements advising going to Coney Island to use N or D service? As a very knowledgeable rider, were you considering alternative ways to get in the city? Go to Church & Nostrand for 2 service or Church & McDonald for the F? Once we got moving north of Ave U, I was thinking over going for the IRT at Bwy-Lafayette or going to 86th with the B and taking the crosstown bus to the East Side. |

They were advising taking the B35 bus to Nostrand or McDonald or taking the B41 to Empire Blvd or GAP. I opted to take the B16 to Empire but there wasn't one coming so I walked towards Flatbush, but a B16 was on Ocean Ave so I ran to catch it but didn't make it. I took the B41 to GAP and continued my trip on the 2/3. I was a half hour late to my PT session, but the workout I got running there made up for it. |

My own mental and emotional workout was trying. Ok, so I'll go to CI and then go into the city from there. But wait the train won't go past Brighton and then a shuttle bus. Damn, that sucks. Fortunately I was curious to see how this would play out, so I was able to "enjoy" the experience and think about posting it here, not that too many people would be interested. Did they issue block tickets for anyone who knew what they were? Still wonder what happened at Dekalb that tied things up for a couple hours? |

Some Video of Incident. Re: Troubles on the Brighton Line in Brooklyn This Morning |

I've been searching and searching for some details of the problem at Dekalb yesterday (4/15/26) and finally I hit pay dirt. https://youtu.be/1uX4WxKsP4c?si=nCn0nKZ6Lt5We-w4. The video, about 20 minutes long, shows the evacuation of an R68 Q that was stuck behind the disabled train. Where it gets neat is the last 4 or 5 minutes, when the passengers in the R68 Q cross over into an R211 B and continue through it till they reach Atlantic Ave. The video is very clear and real and makes you feel like you were there. The crews were very informative and helpful to the passengers. Interestingly, the storm doors on the 211 apparently cannot be latched open to allow easy passage. Also some neat shots as they pass through the motorman's compartment.Bravo!!! |

And so, after all you research, what did finally learn about the cause of the delay? Was it the R-211 or a train ahead of it? Was it due to a malfunction or did the train striking debris? Real train buffs need to know. |

I wonder if it simply was someone who pulled the emergency break either in a panic or just simply wanting to stop the train. An emergency brake activation could have been caused by a pulled cord, but what caused a delay of way more than an hour to move the train? I wonder what the procedure is when a train goes BIE? Is it up to the crew to determine whether there was a pulled cord, debris on the tracks, going through a red signal and getting tripped, etc. Or is supervision required to verify what happened? Also, how easy is it restore normal brake line pressure and move the train after the cause has been determined? Supposing the train in front of the Q was 211 B. Could a hiccup in the 211's operating system cause BIE? If something like that happened and the hiccups continued, is there anyway to dumb down the operating system (like HAL in 2001) and brute force the train back into an obedient state? |

I still cant believe they had to write off 2176 because they forgot how to use pipe plugs on stuck open emergency brake cab valves |

Fact is if things happen infrequently and if you do not do refresher training, forgetting the basics is bound to occur. That's why track safety training is done as often as it is. (BTW: In 3 years as an RCI, I never had to plug an EBV of an EVV. A well swund brake handle often provided the needed adjustment.) |
